What Is Wellness?

Wellness encompasses the collective and interdependent combination of how people think about and experience your life. This concept transcends any one program or departmental effort. Wellness is the active process through which a person becomes aware of, and makes choices toward, a more successful existence.

Wellness is also a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving your full potential. It is multi-dimensional and holistic, and supports a positive and sustainable lifestyle.

Eight Domains of Holistic Health and Wellbeing: Physical, Social, Emotional, Environmental, Financial, Occupational, Psychological, Intellectual

Why Does Wellness Matter?

Wellness is much more than physical health, exercise, or nutrition. Optimal wellness allows us to achieve our goals and find meaning and purpose in our lives. Wellness involves continually learning and making changes to enhance your life in positive ways.

The model used by the Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness includes: physical, social, emotional, emotional, environmental, financial, occupational, psychological and intellectual. By applying the eight domains of wellness to your life, you become aware of the interconnectedness of each dimension and how they contribute to optimal health and wellness.

Domains of Holistic Wellness

Physical Wellness

Maintain a quality of life that allows you to succeed in your daily routines without undue fatigue and stress. Learn to recognize behaviors associated with your daily routines and choose healthier habits while avoiding destructive ones.

Social Wellness

Be part of something bigger than yourself, and communicate effectively. Articulate an awareness of people who are different than you and an understanding of the importance of community engagement.

Emotional Wellness

Recognize your trigger points and manage your emotions in a healthy and productive way. Better recognize and understand other's responses to emotional stimuli and how a group can work together in the most productive way possible.

Environmental Wellness

Protect yourself against environmental factors that harm your health or the ecological balances essential to your long-term health and environmental quality. Make decisions that build a better living and working space for the community.

Financial Wellness

Make accurate short and long-term decisions related to your personal and professional choices. Adequately plan for savings for long-term financial security.

Occupational Wellness

Find a career that you are passionate about. Attain leadership skills that prepare you for future roles on campus, in your community, and in your career.

Psychological Wellness

Recognize that the mind and the body are not two independent parts. Understand that physical activity has a direct impact on psychological behaviors and processes.

Intellectual Wellness

Become a positive, productive and respectful member of both the campus and greater community. Challenge yourself to think outside of the box and maintain an open mind.
