About us

The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is housed within the 82,000 square foot Recreation and Wellness Center. In addition to operating a large indoor facility, the staff also manage the Delta Outdoor Sports Complex, and the Rec Sports Complex.  The Delta Complex consists of a lit, multi-sport field, a Cricket pitch, two outdoor basketball courts, and four outdoor tennis courts. The Rec Sports Complex consists of a lit, multi-sport field, and a sand volleyball court.

The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is dedicated to offering engaging programs and special events to UHCL students and the campus community.  Programs include Group Fitness Classes, Intramural Sports Leagues and Tournaments, Personal Training, Small Group Training, Nutritional Counseling, and Social Events.

Leadership and management of the facilities and programs is provided by six full-time professional staff, and a part-time staff of approximately 50 students, making Campus Recreation and Wellness the largest student employer on campus.

Campus Recreation & Wellness first and foremost provides space for students to recreate, work, and grow. Because of this, we operate differently than a private gym in the following ways:

  • All facilities managed by Campus Recreation and Wellness operate based on University of Houston Clear Lake academic and holiday calendars. Operational hours are established on an annual basis and are posted on our departmental website and social media platforms.
  • We periodically close or alter our hours of operation due to University events, holiday breaks, and necessary maintenance projects that must be completed outside of the semester terms. These adjusted hours/closures will be posted as early as possible and will be available online and relayed through email communications to the UHCL community and RWC members.
  • We periodically host tournaments and special events that may impact the availability of certain spaces in our facilities.
  • Most positions are staffed by UHCL students. We provide a safe and positive work environment that prepares these individuals for life after UHCL. Disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.

Our Story

History of UHCL Campus Recreation

The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness was established in October 2016 by student referendum. The referendum was a student-driven initiative to create a dedicated student fee to support the creation and construction of a new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The fee also funded new positions to lead the department and provide programming and experiential opportunities for the UHCL community.

Construction of the new facility began April 2017 and was completed August 2018.

The Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) opened on August 25, 2018 and has quickly become the hub of student activity and engagement on campus. Providing spaces beyond just fitness and recreation, students utilize the study rooms, lobby area, classrooms and balconies for studying, meeting up with friends, or just taking some time for themselves.

The RWC has won multiple awards for design and functionality, including being named one of the Athletic Business's 2019 Facilities of Merit and one of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association 2019 Outstanding Facilities.

Campus Recreation Advisory Board

The Advisory Board serves as a sounding board for new ideas or initiatives. The board helps drive the mission and vision of the department. The board typically consists of up to 13 students (a mix of undergraduate and graduate students), at least one faculty, one staff, and one alumni member.
