Freshmen

Welcome to the University of Houston-Clear Lake as a first-year student! All new undergraduate freshman students with 0-29 college credit hours or students entering college for the first time after high school graduation are required to attend Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR).

Admitted Semester: Spring 2024

Advising and Registration

As a new UHCL Hawk, your next steps are to complete your mandatory advising and orientation process to the university. This Spring 2024 semester, all newly admitted Freshman are asked to download the Navigate App to setup an advising appointment.

During this one-on-one advising and registration appointment, you will meet with your assigned academic advisor who is specialized in your major. They will help you plan your first semester courses, review your academic degree plan, and give you a personalized introduction to UHCL.  The advising hold will be adjusted during your advising appointment.

Schedule your advising appointment through the Navigate App.  Visit Navigate Student Resources for detailed instructions.

Preparing for your Advising Appointment

  • Bacterial Meningitis Immunizations - If you are under age 22, you must get your bacterial meningitis vaccination and provide proof of vaccination. This is required before you can register for courses at UHCL.
  • Texas Success Initiative (TSI) - Newly admitted students must show they are already proficient in reading, writing and math, or take the TSI Assessment before enrolling in college-level courses.
  • Complete the Advanced Math Placement Test, if applicable - This is used to determine the appropriate math courses in which to place you. The AMPT is advised if your degree plan requires MATH 2413, Calculus I or higher. If you already earned college math credit (including dual credit, AP, or CLEP), connect with your academic adviser before taking the AMPT.
  • Send all completed college credit, including high school, dual credit, early college transcripts, and any AP or CLEP scores. If you have any college credit in progress, let your adviser know.
  • Undecided with your major? – We are here to help! The Exploring Majors Office can help guide you through your career exploration and connect your professional goals with your academic major.

Register/Enroll for Classes

After your advising session, you can enroll in classes. We do not require an enrollment deposit.  The sooner you enroll, the better chance you have at enrolling in the class times you want.  Check out the UHCL Academic Calendar to learn information about registration dates and deadlines.  Log in E-Services to enroll.

For detailed instructions, visit the E-Services How-to Guide for Adding Classes.

If you experience issues scheduling your appointment, contact the front desk of the Advising Office for your academic program, or contact navigate@uhcl.edu if you are just unsure of how to log into Navigate. Just include your 7-digit ID number.
