Student Organization Types

University Sponsored Organizations

These organizations are inherently linked to the university and are considered to be an integral part of the institution. University Sponsored Organizations receive student service fees through the Student Fees Advisory Committee (SFAC). They are typically connected with a university department that provides a full-time professional staff member to serve as the primary advisor. As an affiliate of the Division of Student Affairs, these organizations will be treated as a unit and will be required to submit SFAC reports annually, which includes any fund requests. They are required to register their organization annually through the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

Affliliated Organizations

These organizations operate independently of the University of Houston-Clear Lake, but collaborates with other larger sponsored organizations and departments. They share common goals and provide the most unrestricted open print, digital, online, and broadcast media coverage and commentary to the campus and surrounding community. They are typically connected with a university department that provides a full-time professional staff member to serve as the primary advisor.

Registered Student Organizations

Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are unsponsored organizations that function independently from UHCL and are entitled to request minimal support from the institution. They are private entities and are not extensions of UHCL. The RSOs may conduct the organizations’ business on their own behalf and manage their own finances as they see fit. These organizations may not imply or suggest that they are representatives or agencies with authority to make decisions or speak on behalf of the University of Houston-Clear Lake. These organizations are registered annually through the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. This group will be given the opportunity to submit fund requests through the RSO Activities Funding Board.

In addition, RSO's are required to have:

  • A Faculty or Staff advisor. The RSO advisors are volunteers that will exercise their duties independently of any duties that they may have with the UHCL and not as representatives of the institution. Student organization Advisors must have an account on GetInvolved and must be listed on their organization's roster as "Advisor."
