Risk Management Resources

Student Organizations may encounter a variety of risks throughout their activities and events, and many staff at UHCL are here to ensure you and your members are safe and healthy through it all.

Food Safety

If you are having any kind of food at your event, a food permit must be secured from the Office of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) a minimum of 14 days in advance. Please read EHS’s Temporary Food Permit Policies and Procedures (PDF) to understand the steps required to secure a food permit for your event.

If you are having food at a private event for only your organization members, a food permit does not have to be completed.

Interested in having a Bake Sale Fundraiser? Please adhere to Environmental Health and Safety’s guidelines in regard to food permits. Keep in mind:

  • Members baking and serving the food must have a food handler's certification. One officer should complete a Food Permit for each bake sale your organization is hosting.
  • Ingredients should be properly displayed at the sale.
  • Organizations may not purchase food from a store and resell it.
  • Consult with Environmental, Health and Safety for more information.

Travel

Considering traveling as a student organization? Refer to UHCL travel policies to ensure your trip is approved.

Hazing & Hate Crimes

Texas Education Code - EDUC § 37.152. Personal Hazing Offense - makes failing to report hazing, as well as committing hazing, a criminal offense.

Please see the UHCL Student Code of Conduct (PDF), Section 3.16 for a detailed description of UHCL’s hazing policy.

Sexual Misconduct

Please see SAM 01D.08 – Sexual Misconduct Policy (PDF) for a detailed description UHCL’s Sexual Misconduct policy.

Alcohol & Illegal Substances

Please see the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Policy (01.A.10) (PDF) for a detailed description of the policy.

If you or anyone you know is struggling from drug or alcohol abuse, learn more from Counseling and Mental Health Center's FAQ on Alcoholism (PDF).

Fire Safety

Fire Extinguisher training will be required for some campus events. You will need to complete an online training course, print out and sign certificate, and have it ready to present when asked by Student Involvement & Leadership and Environmental, Health & Safety.

Fire extinguishers will need to be present at certain events, especially those events involving controlled fire/flames or heating devices. Be sure to plan ahead to checkout a fire extinguisher.
