Student Leader Awards
The Student Leadership Awards recognize outstanding student leaders, registered student organizations, faculty/staff advisors, and event accomplishments each year. We welcome the participation and support of members of the UHCL community.
Award submissions are currently closed and will re-open in Spring 2023.

Applications for the 2021-2022 Student Leadership Awards are open now! The deadline to submit all applications is Monday, March 21, 2022
Recommendations will be evaluated based on the descriptions below. The top 3-4 nominees from each category, as decided by the Student Leadership Award Committee, will be invited to attend the Student Leadership Banquet in April 2022.
Peers' Choice student organization and student leader will be voted on by student organizations from March 25 - April 1.
Organization Awards
Do you think your organization can earn one of the following awards? Work with your team to recommend your group in Spring 2023!
The Professional Development Experience of the Year Award is awarded to a registered student organization that hosted an event or activity that either contributed to the professional development of UHCL students in their organization or the greater UHCL community.
The Community Service Event of the Year award goes to an organization who made an impact on campus or in the local community through outreach programs or by volunteering at events geared towards education and civic engagement.
The Social Awareness Event of the Year Award is awarded to a registered student organization that hosted an event or activity that educated the UHCL community on pressing societal issues at the local, national or international level.
The Cultural Event of the Year is awarded to the registered student organization who hosted an event or activity that provided the UHCL community with opportunities to learn about different cultures', values, beliefs, foods, languages, practices, and/or history.
The Innovation Award recognizes the student organization has showcased adaptability while developing new and creative ways to positively impact UHCL students for the betterment of their student experience. This organization strived to develop new events and activities to adapt to the ever-changing needs of its members and community.
The Teamwork in Leadership Award recognizes an organization exemplifies the unique combination of teamwork, commitment, synergy and communication to improve the student experience at UHCL.
The Most Improved Student Organization Award goes to a registered student organization who experienced notable growth through recruiting efforts, programming efforts, and leadership in the past year. The recommended organization should list a series of activities and events that demonstrates their increased level of activity throughout the year that shows constant visibility on campus.
The Best New Organization Award is awarded to a registered student organization that began or rebooted in the past two years. This award goes to an organization that has made themselves know to students, participated in campus-wide events and activities, and utilized the GetInvolved platform to its fullest capability. To be considered, an organization must have actively marketed itself and recruited new members; hosted experiences that addressed the group’s mission in a meaningful way; and have a plan in place to continue building for the future.
The Student Organization of the Year Award recognizes the registered student organization that has successfully demonstrated a high level of visibility, engagement, group cohesion, and leadership at UHCL.
Student organizations receiving recommendations in this category must exemplify the following:
- Well-defined missions and goals that were addressed in all of the projects and events that the organization put on throughout the year
- High-quality events and recruiting efforts
- Positive contribution to the UHCL community
- A commitment to excellence
- High level of participation in large-scale University events such as Student Involvement Expo, Leadership Workshops, Student Government, and Diversity Programs
The Peers' Choice Organization of the Year is awarded to the registered student organization that student leaders choose through the recommendation and voting process. Student organization leaders will vote for the winner March 25 - April 1.
Individual Awards
Do you know an exceptional student leader or organization advisor? Recommend them or yourself!
The Emerging Leader of the Year is a new student at UHCL who is highly active in either student organizations, leadership programs, orientation, SG, or other on-campus involvement experiences. This student needs to have demonstrated a willingness and eagerness to become more involved at UHCL and takes on leadership roles. This student leader should have joined UHCL during either the Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 semesters.
The Distinguished Leadership Award is awarded to a student who models exemplary leadership skills. This person should be active in a wide range of activities with the purpose of improving the quality of life for students at UHCL. A student leader recommended in this category should display the ability to be a team player; built a guiding vision and influenced others to embrace the vision; set goals and followed them through to fruition; and mentored future leaders.
The Outstanding Accomplishments Award goes to a graduating student organization officer who is graduating in Spring 2022 and has been consistently outstanding during their time at UHCL, often serving in a wide range of leadership roles and activities.
The Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award is awarded to a faculty or staff advisor who has went above and beyond as the Advisor for a registered student organization. This person attended organization meetings and events; was available and had a great working relationship with officers and members of the organization; was supportive and committed to the organization’s goals; provided leadership and mentorship to the student organizations officers and members; supported students through challenging times; and was an overall effective advisor.
The Peers' Choice Student Leader of the Year is awarded to the student leader that other student leaders choose through the recommendation and voting process. Student organization leaders will vote for the winner March 25 - April 1.
The Student Leader Awards Committee consists of staff representatives in the UHCL Division of Student Affairs.
