First Day Information for New Employees
Welcome to the University of Houston-Clear Lake! We are excited you have chosen UHCL to be a part of your career in higher education. The information and links below will help to ease your transition to campus. Please be sure to contact Human Resources if you have any questions or need assistance prior to your first day.
Before You Begin
On or before your first day you will need to complete the I-9 Employment process, which includes bringing acceptable documents for employment eligibility verification.
View the list of acceptable documents to bring. Please note your social security card is required for payroll purposes.
Arriving on Your First Day
On your first day you may park for free in Visitor Parking Lot R.
Different departments on campus have different guidelines for the attire worn by staff. Business professional dress is generally appropriate for all departments.
Where to Report
The Office of Human Resources is located on the second floor of the Bayou Building, Room 2537.
Completing New Hire Process
The Office of Human Resources will assist you with completing the remaining new hire paperwork/process.
- There you will obtain your employee ID number and set up your University of Houston-Clear Lake account.
- If you are unable to visit Human Resources on your first day of work, notify your Employment Coordinator so they can assist you with completing the remaining new hire paperwork.
Hawk Card and Registering for a Parking Permit
Hawk Card: You will be able to obtain your Hawk Card once your credentials are set up on your first day.
Parking on Campus
Employee parking is designated to Lots A, B, and D (Faculty & Staff section only). UHCL employees pay $90 a year for parking, which is September 1 – August 31. Employee permits are purchased exclusively online from the Parking and Transportation website. Credit, debit card, and direct payroll withdrawal options are available. The payroll withdrawal option is only available at the beginning of each fiscal year for a limited time. New employees hired during the year will be provided a prorated rate based on the number of months left in the fiscal year.
Faculty/Staff Parking Fees (Subject to Change)
- Lot A – Annual: $142.00
- Faculty/Staff Annual: $90.00
Enrolling in UHCL Benefits
If you are benefits-eligible, you will be given information to review and complete benefits enrollment online. Benefits are administered by the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS). Detailed information about medical and optional benefits is available in the New Employee Benefits Guide, which can be found on our Insurance webpage.
If you do not elect your benefits within your 30 day new hire enrollment period, your coverage will default to the HealthSelect of Texas medical and basic life plans only. You will not be enrolled in any other coverages. Your next opportunity to enroll will be during summer enrollment with coverages becoming effective September 1st.

In accordance with State of Texas law, all benefits-eligible state employees at the University of Houston-Clear Lake are required to participate in a retirement program in addition to Social Security.
Benefits-eligible employees may enroll in the Texa$aver 457 Plan or 403(b) Tax Deferred Annuity at any time during their employment. Contributions can be made before or after-tax.
