Volunteering at the Texas Envirothon has many benefits:

  • All volunteers will receive a Texas Envirothon t-shirt.
  • You'll have opportunities to network with educators and environmental professionals from across Texas.
  • You'll meet environmentally conscious students from across Texas.
  • You'll also reconnect with your own avidity to make a difference for both young people and the Texas landscape.

The 2026 competition will be held in Nacogdoches. Volunteers should have their own transportation. You may be assigned to another volunteer position based on need.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

This event takes place outdoors, rain or shine. Keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly. All field test volunteers should dress for being outdoors and wear sneakers or hiking boots. Bring a sack lunch and a reusable water bottle. Light snacks and water will be available.

If you can help make this year's Envirothon the best one yet, please complete the volunteer sign-up form or contact Wendy Reistle (reistle@uhcl.edu) for more information. Thank you!

Note: Transportation and accommodations are not provided. You may be assigned to another volunteer position based on need.

Station Monitor - Sunday Morning

Station monitors stay at a station during the field competition. They are responsible for giving instructions, handing out test packets, using a walkie-talkie, etc. We recommend bringing a camping chair

Station Trail Guide - Sunday Morning

Trail guides walk around with the teams as they go from station to station. Wear comfortable walking shoes. We suggest bringing a book.

Test Runner - Sunday Morning

Test runners will get some exercise! They will pick up completed tests from each station and carry them to the test graders.

Test Grader Assistant - Sunday Morning

This is perfect if you are looking to volunteer indoors. We need a couple of people to help grade tests as they come in from the field. See a sample of the test: Test with Answers.

Judge - Sunday Afternoon (20)

We are seeking environmental professionals and graduate students to serve as judges. Judges will listen to oral presentations given by the students and score the presentations. There will be a brief volunteer orientation.

Door Monitor/Time Keeper - Sunday Afternoon

These folks will keep doors closed during the presentations and keep time. There will be a brief volunteer orientation.

Room Monitor - Sunday Afternoon and Monday Morning

These folks will monitor students as they wait to present.

Scorer - Sunday Afternoon and Monday Morning

Help calculate and verify team scores.

Team Buddy - Sunday Afternoon and Monday Morning

Team Buddies hang out with the teams, keep them on schedule as they wait to present, and walk them to their presentation room. Bring a book and a reliable timepiece.

Photographer - All Days

*Texas Envirothon will provide camera cards; photographers must have their own digital camera.

Saturday Morning and Afternoon - Photograph presenters, students, general photos, field trip, etc.

Sunday Morning - Photograph students and volunteers during the field competition. The downtime before the test can be a great time to get photos of each team.
