How to Apply to UHCL as an International Graduate

It's time to submit your application to University of Houston-Clear Lake and start the next phase of your education. We are honored that you’ve selected our school as the location for your graduate studies, so we want to do everything possible to ensure a smooth and successful application process.

Once all of the required official documents and test scores are received, an admission decision will be made and you will be notified in writing. Each academic college has a different admission review process including varying review schedules. For questions about admissions requirements or procedures, contact the Office of International Admissions and Programs.

    A standard university application is required.
  • Requirements

    Criteria that require submission of a standardized test score:

    Less than 3.000 cumulative GPA on the last 60 hours of coursework (3.000 GPA preferred on the last 60 hours of coursework) and submission of GMAT score.

    Criteria that waive a standardized test requirement:

    The College of Business will provide a GMAT examination waiver to applicants to the MS in Accounting program who meet one (1) of the following requirements:

    • Majoring in a business-related area at an institution with AACSB business accreditation; AND have at least 18 credit hours of upper-division business-related courses at an institution with AACSB business accreditation with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in those courses; or
    • Earned a bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, or mathematics related major at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; AND has a GPA of at least 3.0 in upper-division courses at the institution; or
    • Earned a graduate degree in business from an AACSB-accredited university or a Ph.D., M.D., Ed.D., D.D.S., or J.D. from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (or U.S. licensure).

  • Requirements

    Applicants to the MBA program may qualify with a standardized test waiver if any of the following conditions are met:

    • earned a bachelor’s degree from a qualified institution with a 3.000 or greater cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from the degree granting institution, or
    • earned an advanced degree from a qualified institution, or
    • completes the MBA certificate start with a 3.000 or greater GPA in the certificate. 
  • MBA Certificate Start 

    Domestic applicants who have completed a bachelor's, degree from a qualified institution with less than a 3.0 GPA, may choose admission to the MBA program with a standardized test waiver through the MBA certificate start. Applicants to the MBA certificate start must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.500 (on a 4.0 system).  Qualified applicants who are admitted to MBA certificate start program must complete their graduate certificate with a 3.000 or greater GPA in the certificate to be granted acceptance into the MBA core program.

  • Admission Review Process 

    All other applicants will be reviewed for admissions by program faculty.  This evaluation will consider all academic coursework and standardized test performance.

    • Earned a bachelor's degree from a qualified institution with a 3.000 or greater GPA on the last-60 hours of coursework attempted, or

    • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
    • GRE or MAT scores
      • The GRE/MAT is waived for applicants who have earned a 3.000 GPA in the last 60 hours of coursework
      • Applicants who have earned less than 3.000 in the last 60 hours of coursework, are required to submit one of the following:
        • A combined GRE score of 294 and a writing score of 3.5
        • An MAT score of 390 minimum
      • Applicants hold a Master's degree from an accredited institution are not required to submit GRE or MAT scores

    Applicants seeking admission to pursue the Counseling M.S. with School Counselor Certification must also upload the following:

    • Texas Teacher Service Record (You can request this from your school district HR department.)
    • TEA Ethics Training Completion Certificate
    • Receipt for TEA Admission Fee  – Please visit the UHCL E-Commerce site to pay the $37.00 Texas Education Agency (TEA)-Advanced Certificate Program Admission Fee (scroll to correct certification).  This fee is payable by credit/debit card only and is non-refundable; therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are in the correct program and certification.  TEA requires all educator preparation programs to collect this fee and forward it to TEA.  TEA uses it to monitor your TEAL (TEA Login) account at the TEA website.  Once you have paid the fee, your will be emailed a receipt.  You need to upload the receipt.

    • A combined score of 297 on the Verbal and Quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and a minimum score of 4.0 on the Analytical Writing portion of the GRE. The GRE must have been taken within the last five years. In the application process for the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction, applicants have the option of providing a writing sample, where the writing activity is proctored at UHCL, in lieu of the GRE.

    The following documents must be uploaded to your UHCL E-Services account (assigned after you have completed the ApplyTexas online application):

    • Letter of Intent - The Letter of Intent, not to exceed 1000 words, should explain why you wish to pursue doctoral-level work in STEM education. Discuss the following topics: your career goals; your research interests as they relate to education; how the program will help you meet your career goals and pursue your research interests. You should also discuss your scholarly and professional accomplishments and your prior work experiences that relate to your interest in, and aptitude for, the graduate program. Focus on your future and how the degree will help you accomplish your long-term goals. Please do not include how you got into the field of education.

      Please structure your letter as follows:

      Paragraph I – Why do you wish to pursue a doctoral-level degree?
      Paragraph 2 – What are your career goals and how will this degree help you accomplish your long-term goals?
      Paragraph 3 – What are your research interests as they relate to education?
      Paragraph 4 – What are your scholarly and professional accomplishments as they relate to education?
      Paragraph 5 – How does your prior work experience relate to your interest in the doctoral program?

    • Three reference forms - At least one reference must be from a supervisor or other administrator familiar with the applicant's work. If possible, at least one of the Reference Forms should be from a professor involved in the applicant's master's program.

      • Select "HSH-Behavior Analysis" as your first choice major only
    • Documents for admission are submitted after completion of the Apply Texas application. All required documents are due by the program application deadline.

    • GRE Scores Not Required: The GRE requirement will automatically be removed after successful submission of the admission application.

    • Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree or higher, preferably in a related field such as psychology, education, or special education. In addition, applicants should identify coursework or practical experience associated with Behavior Analysis.

    Required Supplemental Documents:

    • The following two documents must be uploaded to your UHCL E-Services account (assigned after you have completed the ApplyTexas online application):
      1. Curriculum Vitae: An expanded résumé describing previous education; all work experience; relevant course work and relevant volunteer activities; any honors, presentations, papers, avocations or other relevant life experiences.
      2. Statement of purpose and goals, not to exceed 1,000 words, describing your reasons for wanting this degree and how it fits into career goals
    • Two letters of recommendation, preferably at least one from an academic source, should be submitted directly by the recommenders to behavioranalysis@uhcl.edu. No form is required. Recommendations from academic faculty and/or work supervisors who know you well are especially appreciated.

If passwords are necessary to access the pieces, it is the student's responsibility to communicate them. The committee will not reach out if pieces are not readily accessible. No more than 20 individual pieces should be submitted. The applicant must make clear his or her involvement in the production of each piece. Examples for successful portfolio pieces are written strategic or creative writing materials, graphic design examples, a 15-minute film documentary, a series of digitally prepared photographs with a theme, a website, an app or a game. The most important function of the portfolio is to demonstrate to the selection committee that the intentions outlined in the statement of purpose may be achieved, based on the student's existing experience and skills.

    • Additional Comment - Holding an undergraduate degree in mathematics, engineering, computing, or sciences would be an advantage. However, any college graduate can be successful in this program if they have completed a course in Linear Algebra and the undergraduate calculus sequence. Prospective students that have not taken these courses should talk to academic advisors about how to enroll in those courses with post-baccalaureate status.

Steps to Apply

1) Apply Online

Submit your application at Apply Texas by the application deadline.

2) Pay the Application Fee

All applicants must pay a non-refundable application fee of $75 USD, with the exception of the Ed.D. program which has an additional fee of $60 USD. The application fees can be paid through Apply Texas.

3) Submit your Transcripts by Mail

As a graduate applicant, you must provide the Office of International Admissions & Programs (OIAP) with:

  • Official transcripts, individual mark/grade sheets (showing all passes and fails) and confirmation of degrees or diplomas for all academic studies attempted and completed at other college/universities.
  • The type of documents required will vary based on educational system. You can contact us at oiap@uhcl.edu for additional information regarding what documents you are required to submit.

You must submit these documents in the original language and English translations (if applicable).

  • Translations (word for word) will only be accepted from the college/university, consulate/embassy approved translators, translations conducted by an approved Evaluation Provider or American Translator Association.
  • This information must be received before the final evaluation can proceed.
  • Transcripts (mark/sheets) must clearly indicate dates of attendance, subjects taken and marks/grades earned (all attempts).
  • All marks/grades should be submitted (even failed attempts).
  • Consolidated mark sheets will not be used and considered as official transcripts.
  • Official transcripts (grade/mark sheets) must be sent directly to the Office of OIAP by the registrar, principal, controller of examinations or responsible head of the office where records (such as degrees/diplomas and grades) are kept.

When this is not possible, documents certified by one of the following will be accepted as “true” or official copies:

  • Ministry of Education;
  • University authority such as Registrar, Principal, Controller of Examination, Vice Rector or Rector;
  • Education USA Official; or
  • Diplomatic Mission Representation in the U.S. such as Consulate, Chancellery, High Commission or Embassy.

NOTE: Copies of transcripts, degrees, or diplomas attested by Heads of Departments, Professors, or Notaries will not be accepted.

4) Submit your official Test Scores from the testing agency to UHCL

Before submitting any test score, applicants should make sure that the names on their test report(s) match with the name on the student’s passport.  Please contact the Office of International Admission & Programs for guidance if there is any variation of name (including order).

Proof of English Language Proficiency

If you were born or educated in a country where English is not the native language, you must demonstrate English proficiency prior to admission. You can meet this requirement by taking the paper or internet TOEFL exam, Intensive English Language Test (IELTS) exam, Pearson Test of English (PTE) or by successfully completing the ELS Intensive English Language program.

Your minimum scores must be:

  • 550 on the paper-based TOEFL exam;
  • 79 on the TOEFL (iBT) exam;
  • 6.0 on the IELTS exam, 53 on the PTE exam; or,
  • You can successfully complete level 112 in the ELS Intensive English Language program.

Your scores cannot be more than two years old and only those received directly from the testing company will be accepted. You can also review the academic catalog to determine if you qualify for a waiver of this requirement.

Graduate Test Scores

  • Official GMAT, GRE or MAT scores must be submitted as required by the department of your degree program. Please see the catalog and/or website for the required scores and if the program offers a waiver.
  • Scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Test scores should not be more than five years old.

5) Submit Your Financial Documents

U.S. immigration law requires international students on F-1 and J-1 visas to document their ability to pay the cost of attending (tuition, fees, housing, books, supplies, etc.) equal to one year of study.

Official bank statements issued no older than (6) months

  • Bank statements must have an original signature from the bank agent and or an official stamp/seal of the issuing bank.
  • The amount should be at least equal to the academic year estimate.
  • Multiple funding sources are acceptable as long as the sum of the funding available meets the academic year estimate.
  • Multiple sponsors are acceptable. However, each sponsor must sign an Affidavit of Support. Students supporting themselves must also sign an Affidavit of Support.

Acceptable financial documents include:

Statement from the bank signed by agent or bank stamp/seal

Letter written from bank with the amount clearly indicated in U.S. dollars

  • Checking, savings, or certificate of deposit statements
  • Scholarship letters
  • Letters showing government funding

Unacceptable financial documents include:

  • Statements (including scholarship letters or government funding) older than 6 months
  • Bank statements lacking required tuition amount
  • Credit card statements
  • Employment letters
  • Tax statements
  • Bank statements or bank letters written in language other than English
  • Conditional loan statements

Affidavit of Support are required for international students who plan to apply for F-1 or J-1 visa status. Each sponsor must sign an Affidavit of Support. Students supporting themselves must also sign an Affidavit of Support.

If you meet the academic admission requirements, your admission will not be finalized (documents for your student visa will not be issued) until your original financial documents are reviewed and processed.

6) Submit Your Immigration Documents

All applicants are required to submit a copy of their passport ID page(s). Also,

  • F-1s in the U.S. are required to submit a copy of page 1 and 2 of the SEVIS I-20 and a copy of their I-94 record.
  • J-1s in the U.S. are required to submit a copy of page 1 of the DS-2019 and a copy of their I-94 record.
  • Other visa status holders will need to submit a copy of their I-94.

7) Submit the Student Statement of Understanding

A Student Statement of Understanding form must be signed and submitted as proof that you have read and understand all UHCL admission requirements. This form also identifies your visa status as well as any dependents you may need to include on your I-20 or DS-2019.

How can I submit my transcript (grade/mark sheet) and proof of diploma/degree?

Submit (by post) ALL of the following Original Documents in English and in the native language *

  1. Your Official Transcripts or Consolidated Grade/Mark sheets.
  2. If your institution issues grade/mark sheets, you are required to submit the individual Grade/Mark Sheets for each Semester including passing and failed mark sheets. Semesters need to be clearly marked such as Semester 1, 2, 3 etc. listing the Month/Year they were taken.
  3. Official Proof of Diploma/Degrees or Provisional Certificates.

Explanation of Official Transcripts, Grade/Mark Sheets, Proof of Degrees:

  1. Original Documents or
  2. Documents - all pages - attested by one of the following:
    1. Registrar
    2. Principal
    3. Controller of Examinations

Who is required to submit documents in their native language and English translations?
Students whose documents are usually issued in their native language are required to submit the native language documents and word for word official translations. For example, if transcripts from Mexico are issued, applicants are required to submit the native language transcript and official word for word translations of the transcripts. Applicants who are unsure if they should have native language documents and word for word English translations can e-mail oiap@uhcl.edu for clarification.
What does UHCL consider official translations?

Translation of School Documents Requirement:

University of Houston-Clear Lake requires applicants to submit a word for word translation of your Transcripts, Grade/Mark Sheets, and official proof of degrees.

Word-for-Word translation will be accepted by one of the following:

  1. The College /University who issued your school documents in native language.
  2. Consulate/Embassy approved English translators
  3. Certified Translator - recognized by the American Translators Association.
