Frequently Asked Questions

Where is HHPI located?

HHPI is located in the Recreation and Wellness Building at University of Houston-Clear Lake. It is the first building on the right, when you enter campus from Entrance 3 off Middlebrook Drive.

Can I buy a gym membership through the HHPI?

HHPI offers special programs for people that fit within certain criteria. Through your HHPI membership, you receive routine specialized testing and an exercise program monitored by a trainer in most cases for $50 per month (less than cost of one session at most gyms). And, you will utilize the gym space for exercise.

I am worried that I can't do everything that is asked in the programs. Are they adaptable to my current fitness level?

Yes. Our programs are adjusted for individuals at all fitness and functional levels. Although we are conducting research, there is flexibility and expertise to adapt to your unique needs. There may be some exceptions, we will do everything we can to make sure you can participate.

Do you offer physical therapy?

No, we are not a physical therapy clinic and we do not have any physical therapists on staff. However, we strongly recommend you consider coming to us after you are discharged from therapy to continue making progress. We have rehabilitation scientists, practitioners, and consultants that can help after PT discharge.

Are there medical doctors onsite at the institute?

No, not typically. Our physicians are scientists and instructors in the institute and serve in advisory/ research roles. They do not practice medicine in the institute.

How many days of week do I need to exercise?

Most of our protocols are between 2-4 days per week. We understand that there may be days or weeks where you miss days and will adjust within reason.

What days are you open?

HHPI staff are available from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday. Once you are trained to complete the exercise routines, you can use the gym at other times it is open if you feel comfortable without a trainer.

Do I need an appointment to workout?

No, you will need to make an appointment for the special testing in the labs but no appointment is needed to utilize the gym for your training session.

Do I have to go on a special diet?

No, we will give you recommendations, encourage you to eat healthy, and will ask for dietary recalls from time-to-time to analyze your diet. But in the general program, there is no strict requirement. You may choose to volunteer for studies investigating special diets in which case you would need to adhere to a stricter diet.

Are memberships reimbursed by insurance?

No, but we have done everything we can to offer our services at a reasonable rate. In the future, there may be grants to offset your costs.

Can I tour the facility and talk to someone in the institute?

Yes, please email HumanPerformance@uhcl.edu and we will set up a time to show you the facility.

Where should I park?

A semester parking pass will be provided for all HHPI research participants during their first session. HHPI members should park in Lot D, directly in front of the Recreation and Wellness Building.

What do you mean by the motto "Become the Champion of your Health."

There are a lot of events that are out of our control with respect to health, but the two most impactful things that we can control are what we eat and our level of physical activity. These two changes can have a profound impact on our health and our life. However, we recognize that choosing to eat correctly and exercise is a daily battle with ourselves. Our goal is to create an environment that inspires you to win the daily battle with yourself, to take control of your eating and exercise. If you can do these things, we are confident that you will improve your quality of life and be happier and healthier!
