Mission

The UHCL Center for Faculty Development promotes and sustains a campus culture that values teaching, intellectual inquiry, scholarship and creative engagement. The Center is an incubator for knowledge creation and dissemination to develop the teaching, research and professional service skills for all UHCL faculty, across all disciplines at all levels and career stages. As the success of UHCL rests upon its faculty, professional development and a passion for life-long learning are crucial components for institutional effectiveness.


Marci R. McMahon, Ph.D.

Marci R. McMahon received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 2007 and was promoted to Full Professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2020. She has over a decade of experience working in Faculty Development and is the Co-PI on UTRGV's NSF ADVANCE Partnership Grant ($1.25M). McMahon previously served as the Interim Director and Graduate Coordinator for the Mexican American Studies Program at UTRGV. Her scholarship focuses on the inclusion of Latinx stories in literature, theater, and performance spaces, including a forthcoming book on Latinx theater (Ohio State University Press). Her hobbies include drinking lots of coffee and yoga. 


Robert A. Bartsch, Ph.D.

Robert Bartsch received his Ph.D. in social psychology in 1996. Then, he began working at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin as an assistant professor. In 2001, he was hired and moved to the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He was promoted to professor in 2014. Since he joined UHCL he has served as convener to the Psychology Program, co-director of the University Teaching-Learning Enhancement Center, division chair for Social and Behavioral Sciences and interim associate dean for the School of Human Sciences and Humanities. Rob's research mainly focuses on scholarship of teaching and learning. His hobbies include running and science fiction.


Veronica Ortiz

Veronica Ortiz was hired as the Program Coordinator I in 2019 for the Center of Faculty Development. Since coming to UHCL in 2004 to work in the College of Education, she completed her bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2009 as a first-generation college graduate; in addition, she holds four associate degrees in Early Childhood, Humanities, English, and Office Technology. She later moved to the College of Human Sciences and Humanities where she worked for the associate dean and the director of operations. She also completed UHCL's Leaders in Action program. She was nominated and elected to serve on the University Staff Association board as President for the 2022-2023 academic year. Veronica enjoys working at UHCL, appreciates the diversity of her colleagues and students, and looks forward to learning new things. Her hobbies include teaching herself new skills, baking, and attending traveling Broadway plays.

Angela Kelling received her PhD in Experimental Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  Her main research interests are animal welfare and learning, both formal and informal.  Recent research has explored student assessment and retention, human stress and sleep deprivation, and ways to enhance outcomes for shelter dogs.  She is also involved in research examining best practices to enhance student success for traditionally underrepresented students, including being a co-PI on an NSF S-STEM grant focusing on enhancing student success in STEM fields and a Center for Faculty Development Faculty Fellow working to bring evidence-based recommendations to UHCL for best practices in supporting Hispanic and Latinx students.

Dr. Georgina Moreno joined the faculty at the University of Houston-Clear Lake as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in 2017. Dr. Moreno also serves as a faculty member in the Gender and Women Studies Program and the Latinx and Latin American Studies Program, and is the director of the Neuroscience and Behavior Program. Originally from Houston, Texas, Dr. Moreno graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Iowa and completed her postdoctoral studies at New York University. She also holds a graduate certification in Multicultural Education and Culturally Competent Practice from the University of Iowa. Dr. Moreno's research investigates how emotion and decision-making changes across the lifespan and the underlying physiological mechanisms related to these processes. Additionally, her research interests include Latinx psychology and inclusive teaching strategies.

Xiaojun "Gene" Shan received his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering and MA in Psychology from the University at Buffalo (State University of New York). In 2016, he joined UHCL as an Assistant Professor of Engineering Management. His research interests include healthcare systems engineering, risk management, analytics and STEM education. His research has been published in top journals such as European Journal of Operational Research, Reliability Engineering & System Safety, IISE Transactions, and Journal of the Operational Research Society. He won the New Faculty Teaching and Service Awards from the Center for Faculty Development and was selected as a Fellow for the OSEEER (Operations and Systems Engineering for Extreme Event Research) Early Career Mentoring (ECM) Program sponsored by National Science Foundation. He has served as the Center for Faculty Development’s Faculty Fellow since 2021.
