College of Human Sciences and Humanities Scholarships

These scholarships are for College of Human Sciences and Humanities students only. The application process for these scholarships is available each year during the month of February. Awards for each scholarship are contingent on availability of funding and are made for the following academic year.

Art Education

  • Major: Applied Design and Visual Arts-Must be preparing to teach art at the elementary or secondary school level OR art teachers returning for graduate study in Humanities with an emphasis on studio art, art history and /or art education
  • GPA: High Merit
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate 6 minimum hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
  • Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor
  • Additional Documentation: Brief personal statement on your experience teaching art OR your intent to teach art

Ashley Packard Memorial

  • Major: Digital Media and /or Communication
  • GPA: Minimum GPA is 3.0
  • Status: Undergraduate / Graduate enrolled in at least 5 hours
  • Financial Need: Financial Need will not be a factor
  • Specifics: Preference given to Graduate students enrolled in the Digital Media program.
  • Additional Documentation: 500-600 word essay on this topic: How will your education goals help you achieve your career goals? And one recommendation letter from a previous or current teacher / professor.

Betty Martin King Family Therapy

  • Major: Family Therapy
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status: Graduate minimum enrollment is 5 hours
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)

Chhavi Bhatia Memorial

  • Major: Clinical Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:
    • Graduate taking a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Preference given to students pursuing professional career in the mental health field working within the Asian Indian female population
  • Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor
  • Additional Documentation: Brief personal statement of intended career plan upon completion of the program

Carol Lynne Snyder Memorial

  • Major: Humanities
  • GPA: High merit
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
Nanette Joan Bruckner
  • Major: Any, with a concentration in Women's Studies
  • GPA:  No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
    • Preference given to Graduate student
  • Financial Need:  Will not be a factor.
  • Additional Documentation: Submit a brief statement about your class(s) regarding  Women's Studies.

Christian Andrew Burke/DRDA College of HSH Entrepreneurial Scholarship

  • Major: Digital Media Studies
  • GPA: Minimum GPA is 3.0
  • Status: Graduate minimum enrollment is 5 hours
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
  • Additional Documentation: Submit a short essay about your career goals and leadership service activities.

Deyossie "Duck" Harris Memorial

  • Major: Any Human Sciences and Humanities degree plan
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
    • Preference given to first generation college students or socio-economic challenged students
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
  • Additional Documentation: Submit a 1 page essay about yourself and your education goals

  • Major: Psychology or Clinical Psychology
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:

Elderway Sterns

  • Major: Sociology
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
    • Applicant should be from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
  • Additional Documentation: Submit a 1 page essay on your personal challenges or disadvantages you have faced in your lifetime

Fowles Family

  • Major: Digital Media Studies with a CPS on file
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
  • Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor

Family Therapy

  • Major: Family Therapy
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status: Graduate minimum 5 hours enrolled
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)

Gretchen Mieszkowski

  • Major: Degree or concentration in Literature
  • GPA: Minimum 2.5
  • Status: Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment

James & Nora Hightower

  • Major:
    • Behavioral Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, General Behavioral Sciences
    • Must have a Candidate Plan of Study on file

    • Must exhibit dedication to the Marriage and Family Therapy field

  • Additional Documentation: Submit a 1 to 2 page essay explaining your dedication to the Marriage and Family Therapy field 

Literature

Mary Hodge Student Research Fund for Anthropology

  • Major: Anthropology or related disciplines
  • GPA: high academic merit
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment
    • Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment
  • Financial Need: Will not be a factor
  • Specifics: Must be performing research under the supervision of UHCL faculty
  • Additional Documentation: Statement describing research project and the name of the supervising faculty member

Marilyn Mieszkuc Memorial

  • Major: Any degree-seeking program within the College of Human Sciences and Humanities
  • GPA:
    • Undergraduate minimum 2.5 GPA
    • Graduate minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Status:
    • Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment

  • GPA: 3.25 minimum GPA

    • Must have completed 36 hours in the Family Therapy Program and must exhibit leadership in Family Therapy Program/Profession
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
  • Additional Documentation: Achievement List - Submit a list of honors, awards, achievements, volunteer services for UHCL and or your community

Josephine Tittsworth Social Justice

  • Major: Bachelor of Social Work
  • GPA: Minimum for overall cumulative 3.0 / minimum for core curriculum 3.5
  • Status: Undergraduate enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you must submit a FAFSA to UHCL)
  • Additional Documentation: Submit a personal statement (two page max) that discusses your contributions to the BSW program, university, and/or surrounding communities in the form of promoting Social Justice, the social work profession, and the UH-Clear Lake BSW Program
