Education Scholarships
These scholarships are for College of Education students only. The application process for these scholarships is available each year during the month of February. Awards for each scholarship are contingent on availability of funding and are made for the following academic year.

College of Education Alumni Scholarship - Merit Based
- Major: Declared major in College of Education
- GPA: minimum 3.0
- Status:
- Undergraduate with 6 hour minimum enrollment
- Graduate with 5 hours minimum enrollment
- Exhibit leadership qualities.
- Financial Need: Not a factor
College of Education Alumni Scholarship - Need Based
- Major: Acceptance as a UHCL student seeking teacher certification
- GPA: No specific requirement, but it will be a factor
- Status:
- Undergraduate with at least 6 hours enrollment.
- Current or new UHCL student, former Lee College Baer 2 participant.
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
- Additional Documentation: One recommendation letter from a teacher you had with in the last 2 years and a one page essay on educational goals and how this award will help you achieve these goals.
Bonnie M. Staples
- Major: Education
- GPA: 3.0
- Status:
- Undergraduate enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours
- Preference given to students active in extracurricular activities in school/university and/or community events.
- Financial Need: Will not be a factor
- Additional Documentation: Submit a list of extracurricular activities in school/university and/or community events that you are actively involved in.
Barbara Samuels Literacy Teacher Scholarship
- Major: Graduate Reading LLS Program
- GPA: High merit
- Status:
- Graduate enrolled in a minimum of 5 credit hours
- Have an outstanding teacher profile exemplified by involvement with professional organizations, leadership at school or in the profession, participation in student activities organizations, etc.
- Financial Need: Will not be a factor
- Additional Documentation: Submit a list of your involvement with professional organizations, leadership at school or in the profession, participation in student activities organizations, etc.
COE Development
- Major: Any undergraduate degree plan in the College of Education
- GPA: Minimum 3.0
- Status: Undergraduate with at least 6 hours enrollment
- Financial Need: Will not be a factor
- Additional Documentation: One page essay on why you are pursuing a College of Education degree
Dan White Memorial
- Major: Library Science within the College of Education
- GPA: no specific GPA, but will be a factor
- Status: Graduate enrolled in a minimum of 5 hours
- Financial Need: Financial need will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
COE Endowment
- Major: Any degree plan in the College of Education
- GPA: Minimum 3.0
- Status:
- Undergraduate with at least 6 hours enrollment
- Graduate with at least 5 hours enrollment

Instructional Technology Scholarship
- Major: College of Education major with a concentration in Instructional Technology

Matthew and Gretchen Jaska
- Major: Teacher Preparation Program
- GPA: No specific requirement, but will be a factor
- Status: Undergraduate minimum enrollment 6 hours

Cyril & Martha Kajs
- Major: Degree seeking student in Education
- GPA: Minimum 3.0
- Status:
- Undergraduate full time enrollment (12 hours) preferred; 6 hours minimum
- Graduate full time enrollment (9 hours) preferred; 5 hours minimum

Dr. Rebecca Huss-Keeler and Terry Keeler Graduate ECE
- Major: Early Childhood Education Program

- Additional Documentation: one-page essay explaining why student chose this career path and discuss aspirations in the field
Samuels Family Early Childhood Leadership Scholarship
- Major: Early Childhood major with the Early Childhood Leadership Certificate
- GPA: 2.75 for Undergraduates ; 3.0 for Graduates
- Status: Undergraduate minimum 6 hours; Graduate minimum 3 hours
- Additional Documentation: Completion of three open-ended questions related to student's experience working with young children, career goals, and leadership qualities (request application from Samuels Grant Director)
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
The Nolie Mayo 8-12 Teacher Education Scholarship
- Major: Any UHCL major
- GPA:
- Minimum undergraduate 2.5 on 4.0 scale and 3.0 for graduate
- Status: 9.0 hours
- Status:
- Minimum enrollment is 9 hours
- Accepted as an undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking student, while simultaneously seeking teacher certification for grades 8 - 12.
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
- Additional Documentation: Applicants must submit a 200 - 250 word statement on why they are pursuing a grades 8 - 12 certification.
College of Education Open
- Major: Any College of Education major
- GPA: No specific requirement, but will be a factor
- Status: Undergraduate with 6 hour minimum enrollment
- Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor
- Specifics: Submit a list of honors, awards, achievements, volunteer services for UHCL and or your community AND Submit a personal statement, minimum 1 page - maximum 2 pages, 12 pt. font, double spaced
Partnership for Future Teachers
- Major: Acceptance as a UHCL student seeking teacher certification
- GPA: No specific requirement, but it will be a factor
- Status: Undergraduate enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours - Current / new UHCL students from Galveston College, Lee College, San Jacinto College-North or Houston Community College-Southeast and in Gater2, Baer2, HomeGrown or Pathway to Teaching programs.
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
- Additional Documentation: One recommendation letter from a teacher you had with in the last 2 years AND a one page essay on educational goals and how this award will help you achieve these goals; list of activities that show commitment to teaching
Dr. Steven Rakow Memorial
- Major: College of Education major enrolled in the Intern II Program at UHCL
- GPA: Minimum 3.0
- Status:
- Minimum enrollment is 9 hours
- Career plans to work as a K-12 public school teacher
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
- Additional Documentation: Briefly describe your career plans to work as a K-12 public school teacher.
STEP - Success Through Education Program
- Major: STEP Program
- GPA: Minimum 2.5 overall
- Status:
- Undergraduate full time enrollment (12 hours)
- Graduate full time enrollment (9 hours)
- Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA by the UHCL priority deadline of January 15th)
Dr. Patricia Potter Wilson - Undergraduate
- Major: Any undergraduate major within the College of Education
- GPA: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5
- Status:
- Junior or senior, continuing student.
- Must be enrolled full time for semester(s) of award.
- Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor
- Specifics: Must have completed at least 24 credit hours at UHCL by the end of the spring semester.
Dr. Patricia Potter Wilson - Graduate
- Major: Any graduate major within the College of Education
- GPA: Cumulative GPA of at least 3.7
- Status: Graduate enrolled in a minimum of 5 credit hours or more each semester(s) of award.
- Financial Need: Financial need will not be a factor
- Specifics: Must have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours toward a master's degree at time of application.
Christian Andrew Burke/DRDA College of Education Entrepreneurial Scholarship
- Major: Instructional Design and Technology
- GPA: minimum 3.0 to apply
- Status: Graduate student with minimum half-time enrollment. Preference given to students in full-time enrollment.
- Financial Need: Financial need will be a factor. Stu must submit FAFSA for appropriate aid year and demonstrate financial need.
- Specifics: Must be US citizen or permanent resident.
- Additional Documentation: Applicant must submit essay describing career goals and leadership service activities.
