Faculty Recruitment - Requests to Hire

All tenure-track faculty are hired through a national search process. Exceptions to a national search include:

  • Adjunct faculty
  • Visiting faculty and faculty positions on a one-year or less appointment.

Hiring Temporary Faculty

When hiring temporary, non-benefits eligible adjunct faculty, please contact the respective College Dean's Office for internal college procedures.

To request access to the adjunct pool applications for each department, posted on the Careers Site, please have your Program Director or Department Chair contact facultyaffairs@uhcl.edu on your behalf.

Hiring Regular Faculty

Faculty hires may be in the form of four different types: planned vacancies, new faculty line,
visiting faculty, and emergency hires. All faculty hires require Provost approval.

Planned Vacancies

These permanent faculty lines are usually as a result of retirements, terminal
years, or current faculty member providing a semester or more of notice prior to leaving.

New Faculty Line
  • These permanent faculty lines are usually derived from a new program as result of an approved proforma or a request for new base funding for an existing program.
  • New positions from an approved proforma can submit their proforma documentation for the new faculty line and any metrics associated with the position in place of the rationale section.
Visiting Faculty
  • These temporary faculty lines are generally visiting assistant professors or visiting lecturers and coincide with hiring for a planned vacancy or new faculty line.
  • These faculty lines are for 1-2 academic years.
Emergency Faculty
  • These usually occur due to unforeseen vacancies in a current faculty line as a result of faculty leaving on short notice, death of a faculty member, or current faculty member on FML for extended leave.
  • These temporary, non-benefits eligible faculty lines are approved by the Provost for 1-2 semesters.
  • Data analysis and detailed documentation is not necessary however a strong rationale for the need to fill the vacancy via an emergency faculty hire is required.
  • A subsequent request to fill the vacancy with a permanent faculty hire should follow the same request to hire process as the outlined above for a planned vacancy faculty line but is not required at the time of the emergency faculty hire request.

In an effort to remain diligent financial stewards and conserve funds, when requesting to fill a vacant or new lecturer, visiting faculty, or tenured-track/tenured faculty position, approvals must be obtained from the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the President of the University, Faculty Affairs, and the Budget Office.

  1. Complete the Faculty Position Request / Reclassification Form, ensuring that the appropriate CIP Code for the position is included, and submit to facultyaffairs@uhcl.edu.
  2. Use the CUPA salary range provided by Faculty Affairs on the Faculty Position Request / Reclassification Form to complete the Critical Position Request Form for submission to the Provost.
  3. If the Critical Position Request Form is approved by the Provost and President, Faculty Affairs will submit the Faculty Position Request / Reclassification Form to the Budget Office.
  4. Upon Budget Office Approval, Faculty Affairs will reach out to the the Dean's Office for posting of the position.
