The Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Distance Education Program is designed to remove these barriers by providing a flexible pathway that allows you to continue supporting young learners while advancing your education and earning your degree.

Practice-Based Learning

In the Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Distance Education Program, you will build on your daily work in the classroom by receiving focused pedagogical and content area instruction from highly qualified, interdisciplinary faculty. This preparation is intentionally connected to your experiences as a paraprofessional, allowing you to apply new knowledge directly within your school community.

Authentic Field Experiences

During your final semesters, you will continue growing in authentic early childhood settings, increasing your hours in the field as you refine your skills, deepen your instructional decision making, and learn from mentor teachers who support your transition into the role of a certified educator.

Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Program Admission Requirements

  • Minimum overall GPA or GPA in last 60 hours must be 2.5.
    • Note: The GPA for enrollment to UHCL is not the same requirement for enrollment to the UHCL Teacher Education Program (TEP).
    • Acceptance to the Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Program is not guaranteed if accepted to UHCL. If accepted to UHCL but not the Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Program, students may take online and Hyflex courses where TEP Admission is not a prerequisite until their GPA meets requirements for enrollment into the TEP.

    • 12 hours in a combination of the following courses: English Language Arts and Reading, History, Social Studies, and Math.

Application Submission and Acceptance

Applications for the UHCL Hawks Certifi-ED Program are accepted year-round. However, to ensure acceptance for a specific entry time: Fall, Spring, or Summer, applicants must submit a completed application no later than the date noted on the chart below to allow ample time for program paperwork to be processed.

Semester Seeking Enrollment Deadline to Ensure Enrollment
Fall July 1st Prior
Spring November 1st Prior
Summer April 1st Prior

Applications received after the deadlines, but before the beginning of the new semester, may be reviewed before the semester begins, but does not guarantee approval in time for enrollment for the current semester. Paperwork received after the first day of classes will be considered for the next semester’s enrollment.

Information on the application is reviewed and confirmed by the program director which involves contacting the district representative. Depending on the response time of the district representative, the approval process may take a day to a month to complete. If you have not received an acceptance or denial email within two weeks of applying, you are encouraged to remind the district representative that they will receive a confirmation email from the program director.

Please note:

  • Applicants that do not meet the minimum requirements as noted on the flow chart and GPA requirements will not be considered for enrollment in the Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Program. A new application is required if you choose to reapply at a later date.
  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted. There are three pages to the application, and all fields of each page must be completed. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all fields of all three pages are completed before submitting the application.

UHCL Teacher Education Program Admission

Once you have been accepted to the UHCL Hawks Certifi-ED Program, you must enroll in ECED 4100 or ECED 5010 in your first semester at UHCL. During this course you will submit your application to the UHCL Teacher Education Program (TEP). Admission to the TEP is required for courses with Field-Based Experiences. The acceptance requirements and application process can be found at Teacher Education Program (TEP) Application.

Course Load Requirements

Undergraduate courses are completed in both 16-week and 8-week terms during the fall and spring semesters. Summer courses are completed during Summer 1 (5-week) or Summer 2 (4-week) terms. The education courses offered during the summer

are limited; therefore, it is recommended that the candidate take any courses not related to education during summer sessions. Once assigned an advisor, they will guide you on course availability and the pacing of completing all credit hours for graduation. A full-time course load at the undergraduate level is 12 hours (four courses).

Field Experience Requirements

Because you are preparing for a career in education, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) required completion of 50 hours of structured, Field-Based Experiences (FBE) that will occur throughout the education courses. You will complete the FBE in your district/campus role. If a course assignment requires working with a grade-level or content area outside of your classroom, it is the candidate’s responsibility to make arrangements with their campus administration for a field experience location.

Documentation confirming your role in a TEA approved school must be provided as part of the application process and must be confirmed again within the first two weeks of any course requiring field-based experience. UHCL will not provide a placement site for your field-based experiences or Clinical Teaching.

Securing a Partnership School

To participate in the UHCL Hawks Certifi-ED program, you must be employed as a paraprofessional in a preschool through grade 3 Classroom at TEA-accredited campus.

The following documents will be emailed to the district Administrator indicated in your application vis Docu-Sign. These signed documents must be on file to complete your Certifi-ED application.

  • UHCL Hawks Certifi-ED Campus Partnership Letter
  • District/Campus Partnership Agreement
  • UHCL Affiliation Agreement

Please note: If accepted to the Hawks Teach Certifi-ED Program, applicants must resubmit partnership agreement documents if the partnership campus changes from what was approved in the initial application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tuition cost for the program?

The cost of attendance at UHCL includes both direct costs and additional costs. Keep in mind that the total cost also depends on factors such as how many credit hours the applicant is taking, textbooks, and materials required for each class. Please see the Cost and Aid information on the UHCL website. If you have questions about tuition and fee plans, please contact the Student Business Office at sbs@uhcl.edu or 281-283-2170.

How do I apply for financial aid?

If you have questions about financial aid or other types of aid available, please visit the Apply for Aid section on the UHCL website or contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at finaid@uhcl.edu or 281-283-2480.

I know I don't meet the eligibility requirements, but it would be helpful in my current situation to take all online classes for a semester, then go back to face-to-face classes?

If you do not meet one of the qualification requirements to enter the UHCL Hawks Certifi-ED program, you may take Online or Hyflex courses, but you will NOT be able to complete your Clinical Teaching in your educational aide or teacher of record (MAT) placement. You will have to complete your Clinical Teaching in one of the UHCL Partner Schools.

I am a paraprofessional at a campus for grade levels not associated with my selected certification area.  Can I complete my course requirements at that campus?

All field requirements must be completed on a campus appropriate for your certification area. You must work with your current district to arrange a placement in your certification area or arrange to take time to travel to the campus, working with grade levels appropriate to your certification.

I am trying to secure a placement at a TEA-approved school. Can I be accepted to the program and send that information later?

The partnership agreement is part of the application process. The entire application must be completed to be considered for the program. If you have additional questions, please contact the COE Advising Office at education@uhcl.edu.
