All Teacher Education Program (TEP) Application Documents must be submitted online through the proper TEP Canvas Course. Please read and follow the applications instructions found in the appropriate program section below.
Applying for the Undergraduate TEP Program
Admission to the Undergraduate Initial Certification Teacher Education Program (TEP) at UH-Clear Lake requires that students be enrolled at University of Houston-Clear Lake in the College of Education, College of Human Sciences and Humanities (HSH), or College of Science and Engineering (CSE) as "certification seeking."

Please note that the first time you access the TEP application course, you will be required to complete a statement acknowledging that you have read and agree to abide by the COE Professional Dispositions. Once this is completed, you will be given access to the application portion of the course.

Admission to the Alternative Certification (ACP) TEP Program at UH-Clear Lake requires that students be enrolled at University of Houston-Clear Lake in the College of Education as certification seeking.

Admission to the Master's of Arts in Teaching TEP Program at UH-Clear Lake requires that students be enrolled at University of Houston-Clear Lake in the College of Education as certification seeking.

Application Processing
After completion and submission of the TEP Application and supporting documents, please allow up to 10 business days for the COE Certification Office to process the application. If you are missing any information or your application is denied or pending, the COE Certification Office will contact you.
Admission Approval and Mandatory Acceptance Response
If your application is approved, you will receive an email from the certification office verifying your admission. You MUST "ACCEPT" your admission with a response email stating your acceptance of admission to the program.
If your application is denied, you will receive an email from the certification office explaining the reason denial and action steps to reapply.
Upon being admitted to TEP, you will be able to register for the pedagogy (teaching) courses listed on your degree/certification plan. You may contact the Certification Office at 281-283-3618 or certification@uhcl.edu if you have additional questions.

TEP Application Essay Instructions and Rubric
TEP Application Essay Guidelines for Writing Essay Submission Place your full name on paper, make it one-page, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font.
Paper must address the top two items in the left ‘Exceeds Expectations’ column below.
Guidelines – describe your personal characteristics and previous experiences that show us the certification you are seeking is the appropriate certification for you. Describe the characteristics of students in your area of certification and share your thoughts on what it takes to be an effective teacher for this age group. If you have had experiences working with students in this age group, be sure to describe them. Be sure your name is typed at the top of the paper, in the header. Use the rubric on the following page as a guide. Before you submit the paper with your application, consider taking your paper and the rubric to the UHCL Writing Center (SSCB 2101) for review. Do not plagiarize; submit your own, original work.
Honesty Code – as a reminder, the Honesty Code is the university community’s standard of honesty and is endorsed by all members of the University of Houston-Clear Lake academic community. It is an essential element of the University’s academic credibility. It states: “I will be honest in all my academic activities and will not tolerate dishonesty.”
Verification of Speech Competency for Teacher Certification Students
As required by the State Board of Education rules for teacher certification, (Title 19, Part 7, Chapter 227, A. 10.), before students may be admitted to an educator preparation program, students must be screened for "college level skills in... oral communication". At the University of Houston-Clear Lake, students must be able to understand and speak the English language sufficiently to use it easily and readily in conversation and teaching.
To meet this requirement, students may choose either of the following options:
1. Students must complete, or have completed, an approved 3-hour college credit Public Speaking course with a grade of C- or better. Public speaking is not "Interpersonal Communication" or "Group Communication".
OR
2. Students must provide the following information, obtain a UHCL instructor's verification and signature, and upload this information to the Blackboard shell, along with all documents required for the Teacher Education Program.
Students should select a UHCL instructor who has observed the student's public speaking skills in the English language, such as during a formal presentation.
