Training Philosophy
The mission of UHCL Counseling and Mental Health Center is to guide and to support
the members of the university community in the achievement of their educational, vocational,
and psychological goals. We are also committed to training future counselors and psychologists
whose professional development goals are consistent with working in a college environment.
Therefore, our philosophy of training is to provide trainees with the experiences
and training necessary to develop and grow as counselors in a flexible and supportive
professional environment while providing excellent direct services to UHCL students.
We believe that the trainee, under supervision, is a part of the professional staff
team and provides valuable input and services to students.
Schedule
A two-semester commitment is required, the fall and spring. The trainee is expected
to be onsite for 16-20 hours each week (not including lunch breaks), divided over
two or three days. While all trainees are expected to be present for case conferences
and training seminars, we attempt to be flexible in working with them to set a mutually
favorable schedule for the rest of their hours, within the limits of our office hours
Practicum Requirements
Because our philosophy is to work as a team with the trainee and provide excellent
counseling services to students, we expect that trainees possess a sufficient level
of clinical skill and experience before they begin, such that they are capable of
functioning competently under supervision.
The trainee should have:
- Adequate academic and clinical preparation and experience
- Acceptable levels of clinical skills and the ability to conceptualize clients as appropriate to our setting
- A desire to work in a college counseling center
- Understanding of issues facing college students and some understanding of the purpose and functioning of a college counseling center
- Good interpersonal skills, positive attitude towards supervision, ability to interact and work well with staff, and personal maturity
- A strong sense of ethics
