Reading specialists have the opportunity to help students who are striving to improve their literacy skills at all levels of education. With your Reading Specialist EC-12 Certification from University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education, you will be equipped to work with students and teachers to achieve literacy success. Your coursework will promote culturally relevant teaching and foster a broad understanding of multiple perspectives through differentiated instruction across curriculum. To support these efforts, a wide range of literature is used to increase your capacity to think critically, responsively, and reflectively.
Achieve Your Reading Specialist Certification
Students seeking Reading Specialist certification must hold a master's degree and
a valid Texas teaching certification and verify a minimum of two years approved successful
full-time teaching experience. A passing score on the Reading Specialist Texas Examination
of Educator Standards (TExES) is required. The plan consists of a minimum of 18 semester
hours.

The UHCL application is available online through Apply Texas. The online application is scheduled to close for Graduate students after the Formal UHCL Student deadline of each semester.
Applying After the Priority Deadline
New, non-degree seeking, and returning UHCL students applying after the deadlines above may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the appropriate graduate enrollment counselor for more information. A $50.00 Late Registration Fee or $50.00 Late Payment may apply.
