Reading specialists have the opportunity to help students who are striving to improve their literacy skills at all levels of education. With your Reading Specialist EC-12 Certification from University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education, you will be equipped to work with students and teachers to achieve literacy success. Your coursework will promote culturally relevant teaching and foster a broad understanding of multiple perspectives through differentiated instruction across curriculum. To support these efforts, a wide range of literature is used to increase your capacity to think critically, responsively, and reflectively.

Achieve Your Reading Specialist Certification

Students seeking Reading Specialist certification must hold a master's degree and a valid Texas teaching certification and verify a minimum of two years approved successful full-time teaching experience. A passing score on the Reading Specialist Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) is required. The plan consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours.

Applying After the Priority Deadline

New, non-degree seeking, and returning UHCL students applying after the deadlines above may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the appropriate graduate enrollment counselor for more information. A $50.00 Late Registration Fee or $50.00 Late Payment may apply.
