Flexible Workplace

University of Houston-Clear Lake encourages the use of workplace flexibility to support the well-being of our employees and achieve our workplace goals. Although not every position can take advantage of these arrangements, there are often options for a flexible/alternate work schedule that can be customized to work for both the department and the individual.  A flexible workplace can benefit employees and departments and contribute to a positive work/life culture.

Flexible Work Schedule

In accordance with UH System Administrative Policy 02.A.20, the University of Houston-Clear Lake operating hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (with one hour off for lunch).

  • Regular, full-time staff employees are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week unless in paid leave status.
  • Part-time and temporary employees are expected to work those hours designated by the employing department as necessary to fulfill the requirements of their position.

All university offices shall remain open during the noon hour and appropriately staffed in order to transact the business of the department/unit. However, the work schedules of some employees may be adjusted as necessary to provide optimal operational efficiency.

Requesting a Flexible Work Schedule

Complete the Flex Work Schedule request form and discuss your desired work schedule with your direct supervisor.  Upon approval from the supervisor, please forward the request form to Human Resources.

Alternative Workplace Arrangement

In accordance with Alternative Work Arrangements Policy, the University of Houston-Clear Lake permits alternate work arrangements as long as they are in the best interest of the University, will maintain the productivity of the employee, and follow University rules, procedures and policies.

Alternative Work Arrangement FAQs

  • Employees may be allowed short-or- long term alternate work arrangements, provided they continue to serve their customers effectively and efficiently and meet established institutional and departmental goals.
  • Alternative work arrangements may be implemented as a means of achieving administrative efficiencies, improving productivity and job performance, supporting business continuity plans, and supporting the hiring and retention of a highly competent workforce.
  • Alternative work arrangements are a variation in where a job is performed (e.g., remote) or the time the work is performed (e.g. alternate schedule).

Alternative Work Guidelines

  • Must be employed for at least 90 days.
  • Requests for occasional remote work on an as-needed basis will be considered by the employee’s immediate supervisor.
  • Requests for alternative work arrangements will only be accepted over a two-week period prior to the beginning of each semester.
  • Approved alternate work arrangements are effective for one full academic/fiscal year.
  • Staff interested in continuing with an alternative work arrangement must reapply for each academic/fiscal year.

Requesting Alternative Work Arrangement

  1. Complete the Alternative Work Agreement Form.  Download the form to activate fillable fields.

  2. Complete remote work training in LinkedIn Learning. An active LinkedIn Learning license is required – see LinkedIn Learning Activation Guide.

  3.  Attach verification of completion of required training and learning activities, and forward to supervisor for approval.
