Therapy Services

Therapy Options

Individual Therapy

Meet individually with a therapist to discuss stress or personal matters, including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, stress, family issues, substance use, grief/loss, trauma, body image, eating disorders, cultural and identity concerns, and adjusting to UHCL.

Group Therapy and Support

In group therapy, 4-8 people meet with one or more therapists to talk about issues that they are facing. The group format means members can give and receive support and encouragement. We host a variety of groups to meet your needs.

Couples Therapy

UHCL Counseling and Mental Health Services offers couples therapy for students and their partners (partners may be non-students). Services are provided for students in any type of intimate relationship, regardless of gender or living arrangement. Both members of the couple must be present at the intake appointment.

Getting Started

Counseling is free and confidential. Please call 281-283-2580 or stop by SSCB 3.103 to schedule an initial consultation appointment.

Initial Consultation

The initial consultation is a one hour appointment, which includes 30 minutes of paperwork and a 20-minute meeting with a therapist.

The appointment helps to identify current concerns, review Counseling and Mental Health Center policies and procedures, and develop the best plan for further assistance. Options include individual, couples therapy, group therapy and/or psychiatry.

Standard Appointments

The standard individual or couples therapy appointment will be 45-50 minutes with your assigned therapist. Group therapy sessions are scheduled for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Other Support

In addition to our services, students may be referred to consult with another office on campus, such as Career Services or the Student Success Center.

Your therapist may also refer you to a community mental health provider if your concerns would be best addressed by a therapist who can offer long-term or specialized mental health treatment. If a community referral is warranted, your therapist will help connect you to appropriate services.

Special Accommodations

Please contact us if you have a disability that requires accommodations to complete the initial consultation paperwork.
