The Artist Project Space (APS) is a student-run gallery in the main corridor of Arbor North Building. University of Houston-Clear Lake Art and Design faculty members established APS as a staple of student life within the program, a place where student artist and curators can present their work in a public setting. APS strives to facilitate a creative, interdisciplinary exchange between students, professors and arts professionals across the UHCL community and beyond. APS also serves as an advocate for student voices and an outlet for innovative, challenging work.
Art and Design program faculty members are the curatorial voice for APS, reviewing all proposals and setting the exhibition schedule throughout the school year. Both installation and de-installation are the sole responsibility of the artists/curators. Upon completion of the show, all walls must be repaired and painted, leaving the space in the same condition in which it was received. Budget needs are the sole responsibility of the individuals submitting proposals.
The Art and Design program encourages proposals that are site-specific, traditional, non-traditional, experimental or collaborative. Visual art in all media, including installation, video and performance art, will be considered. Strong proposals will present works that are:
1. Original, innovative and contemporary
3. Difficult to show elsewhere
4. Feasible, based on project description and demonstrated ability
5. Thematically coherent, if created by more than one artist
6. Site-specific, if submitted by one artist or collaborative team
7. New or haven’t been exhibited in Houston
The Art and Design faculty will only review digital submissions. Please provide the following information to email@example.com.
- Narrative - Limited to one page/500 words. Include a description, exhibition title and the names of artists involved. Also, state the ideal time frame (shows usually do not exceed five weeks).
- Checklist - Provide a list of each piece you wish to show in the exhibition, noting caption information that include title, year, medium and dimensions.
- Work Examples - For visual artists, we'll accept a maximum of 15 digital images of work. Image files must be in .jpg format. Images should be at least 1,000 pixels on its shortest side, but the total file size of all the images is not to exceed 10MB in email attachments. For video and performance artists, include a YouTube or Vimeo link to no more than five minutes of video.
- Resume/CV - Save this document as a PDF or Microsoft Word document (.pdf, .doc, .docx). For group exhibitions, please save all resumes to one document.
- Exhibition Design - Refer to the floor plan above to plan your layout.
- Installation/Maintenance/Safety/Accessibility Concerns
Make sure all files are complete and will open in their respective software. The Art and Design faculty will not review files that we cannot open. The selection process may take six to 12 weeks for completion. We will notify you of your proposal status by email as soon as we finalize the selection process. All accepted proposals will posted on the gallery’s calendar will the name/s of the artists in the exhibition. If you do not want you name posted, you must notify us with in your proposal.
Exhibition Marketing and Reception Planning
All promotional materials must go through the UHCL Marketing and Communications for approval. You will need to send a proof of your design to firstname.lastname@example.org before printing to ensure compliance with university branding guidelines. Event notifications should contain the sentence: “Any person needing an accommodation for a disability in order to participate should contact the UHCL ADA Coordinator at 281-283-2648 at least one week prior to the event to arrange for the accommodation.”
Request news coverage about your exhibition. Submit your show details to at least four weeks before the event to allow for maximum publicity.
