Consider a Second Career Teaching Children

Change careers and learn to inspire young people to achieve new academic goals in the classroom. Your coursework, combined with training from dedicated professors in University of Houston-Clear Lake's accredited College of Education will ensure that you will become a leading educator in your school. If you're interested in sharing your passion for language arts with kids, the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Plan in English, Language Arts and Reading 7-12 provides you with the instruction and experience both inside and outside the classroom that you'll need to become a fully certified teacher. This is a career path that will enable you to share a wealth of knowledge and experience you've obtained in your previous career and become a positive role model to young students. School districts welcome teachers with diverse backgrounds who can bring real-world knowledge and experience to enhance the classwork and challenge the students.

Put your Passion for Language and Reading to Work for Children

Good reading, writing and comprehension skills are the foundations for students' overall success. UHCL's College of Education offers courses that focus on the principles of composition, reading in content subjects, and the literature of adolescence. You'll help students build their writing and comprehension proficiency and become overall better communicators. These are critical skills that are transferrable to any ultimate career path and will ensure student' progress through high school graduation and beyond.

Although it is not necessary for students holding at least a bachelor's degree and seeking initial teacher certification to pursue a second bachelor's degree, those who wish to do so must meet the university's lower-level requirements in addition to the requirements for both teacher certification and the second degree, unless such requirements were met through the completion of the first bachelor's degree. These lower-level requirements are described in the Core section of the catalog.
