Learning Assessment and Psychotherapy

Learn psychological assessment and intervention with a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from University of Houston-Clear Lake. Rigorous coursework will provide you with contemporary knowledge and skills in evidence-based individual therapy, group therapy and psychological assessment. Clinical training will prepare you for a career in mental health. You can also pursue specialized study in behavioral medicine, anxiety disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies, and behavioral parent training for childhood externalizing behaviors.

Developing Skills Through Applied Practice

You will complete a two-semester internal practicum in the Psychological Services Clinic and a 500-hour internship at one of the many quality sites in the Houston area. As part of this applied learning, you will work closely with skilled, licensed supervisors and receive significant formative feedback to refine your skills. With emphasis on challenging coursework and practical skills, this program prepares you to pursue professional practice in clinics, hospitals, research facilities or private practice. Program coursework and training meet Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Psychological Associate licensure requirements in Texas. Also, students can work with UHCL's faculty on original research.

Admission Requirements

  • Application

    Step 1: Apply online for admission to the University of Houston-Clear Lake as a graduate student.
    Step 2: Apply online to the Clinical Psychology Program before January 25.

  • Prerequisites
    Graduate admission to the university. The program requires five prerequisite undergraduate psychology courses (15 hours): Introductory Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality and one (3 additional hours) of upper-level psychology. Preference is given to applicants with all prerequisites completed.
  • Requirements
    • Submit GRE scores (not more than 5 years old) through the standard reporting procedures.
    • Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended.
    The following two documents must be uploaded to your UHCL E-Services account (assigned after you have completed the ApplyTexas online application):
    • Curriculum Vitae: An expanded résumé describing previous education; all work experience; relevant course work and relevant volunteer activities; any honors, presentations, papers, avocations or other relevant life experiences
    • Statement of purpose and goals, not to exceed 2 pages single-spaced, describing your reasons for wanting this degree and how it fits into career goals.

    Three (3) letters of recommendation and recommendation forms (found on program homepage) should be submitted directly by the person making the
    recommendation to clinicalschool@uhcl.edu. Recommendations from academic faculty and/or work supervisors who know you well are especially preferred. 

    In addition to the university application fee, there is an additional application fee of $35 for the Clinical Psychology application. Make check payable to "University of Houston-Clear Lake" and send it to:
