Faculty Fellowship 2021-2022

Spring 2021 Academic Affairs Task Force

Thank you to Professors Elizabeth Beavers, Terry Chvala, Daniel Imrecke, Lauren Kussro, Ivelina Pavlova-Stout, and Heather Pule for being faculty representatives on the Spring 2021 Academic Affairs task force.  They helped represent faculty interests this Spring around academic affairs needs and policies as UHCL navigates its way through COVID-19.


SACSCOC Faculty Fellow

Thank you to Dr. Renee Lastrapes for accepting a one-year appointment as SACSCOC Faculty Fellow to help the university prepare for its 10-year accreditation.


University Advancement Outstanding Professor Award

Congratulations to Dr. Mike McMullen, Professor of Sociology, and Dr. Brian Stephens, Associate Professor of Biotechnology and Biology! They both received the Outstanding Professor Award from University Advancement at the 2020 Virtual Alumni Celebration.


20-21 Marilyn Mieszkuc Memorial Professorship in Women's Studies

Congratulations to Dr. Wanalee Romero for receiving the Marilyn Mieszkuc Memorial Professorship in Women's Studies for 2020-21! She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Humanities and the Director of the university's First-Year Seminar program. This annual award recognizes a faculty member for their scholarly contributions to gender and women's studies.


Hispanic Heritage Month

Thank you to Drs. Christina Cedillo and Desi Rios for their talk and virtual cooking demonstration titled Cocinar, Chismear y Cenar, as part of UHCL's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.


UHCL Friday Morning Continuing Education program

Thank you to Dr. Everette Penn for his talk on Police and Youth: Working to Reduce the Social Distance and his discussion of the Teen and Police Service Academy (TAPS) for the UHCL Friday Morning Continuing Education Program.


University Faculty Fellowship Awards

President Blake recently announced the recipients of four University Faculty Fellowship Awards for the 2020-2021 academic year. They are:

  • Dr. Nicholas Kelling, Associate Professor of Psychology, College of Human Sciences and Humanities
  • Dr. Shreerekha Subramanian, Department Chair of Liberal Arts and Associate Professor of Humanities, College of Human Sciences and Humanities
  • Dr. Larry Rohde, Department Chair of Environmental Sciences and Associate Professor of Biology and Biotechnology, College of Science and Engineering.
  • Dr. Barry Marks, Professor of Accounting, College of Business

The recipients of this year's Fellowship Awards are acknowledged for their accomplishments and contributions to University of Houston-Clear Lake for exemplary teaching, research and service. Congratulations to all the recipients!


Habitat for Reading

Dr. Sheila Baker supervises an innovative program that places books in the hands of children at an early age. The Habitat for Reading program provides home libraries to recipient families of Habitat for Humanity homes. The home libraries are a collection of books that have been carefully selected by SLIS students based on the children's ages, interests, and ethnicities. The program helps build the literacy skills necessary for personal, academic and lifelong success.


Faculty Network Mentoring Toolkit

Faculty Thank you to Drs. Sarah Elkins, Lisa Sublett, and Christine Walther for their service this summer creating a 47-page Faculty Network Mentoring Toolkit for the College of Human Sciences and Humanities to help promote how faculty mentor other faculty. This work was sponsored by a grant from the Center for Faculty Development.


Clear Lake of Senior Programs (CLASP)

Thank you to Dr. Karen Alexander and Dr. Juliana Dean for presenting "Health and Wellness in Diverse Communities" at the Clear Lake of Senior Programs (CLASP) this February!


Friday Morning Continuing Education

We have a large number of faculty who make presentations at the Friday Morning Continuing Education series. In February presentations have included Dr. Anne Gessler speaking on UHCL's Common Reader book, Dr. Stephen Cherry talking about Tibetan Buddhism, Dr. Mike McMullen and Dr. Dawit Woldu on their travels to Kenya, Dr. Craig White speaking on American Indian literature, Dr. Carol Carman demonstrating how statistics can mislead, Dr. Bill Powers discussing World War II, and Dr. Lisa Gossett discussing Houston environmental issues. We thank you for spending the time sharing your expertise with the Clear Lake community.


Faculty Development Day

Thank you to all the faculty who made presentations at our recent Faculty Development Day on January 31st. University of Houston-Clear Lake's nominee for the 2019-2020 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award

Dr. Jiang LuCongratulations to Dr. Jiang Lu, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering in the College of Computer Science and Engineering, as the University of Houston-Clear Lake's nominee for the 2019-2020 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award. The Piper Professor Award is given by the State of Texas for superior teaching at the college level. We wish Dr. Lu good fortune for his application to the state level award.

We also recognize the following UHCL faculty for being a semi-finalists for this nomination for their excellent teaching: Dr. Gary Boetticher, Dr. Leslie Gauna, Dr. Khondker Hasan, and Dr. Unal "Zak" Sakoglu.


10th Annual Conference of the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center

Dr. Maria CurtisThank you to Dr. Maria Curtis, Associate Professor of Anthropology, for coordinating the 10th Annual Conference of the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center at UHCL this October. This year's conference theme was "Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S."


Recent Center for Faculty Development Grant Recipients

Dr. Gene ShanWe appreciate the work of Dr. Gene Shan, Assistant Professor of Engineering Management, and Dr. Isabelle Kusters. Assistant Professor of Public Health. They recently received a Center for Faculty Development grant to attend a teaching conference and bring back information to the UHCL faculty. Dr. Shan organized a presentation about improving online discussions, and Dr. Kusters led a discussion about reducing microaggressions in the classroom.


Low Carb Houston Conference

 Dr. William AmonetteGood job to Dr. William Amonette and the rest of UHCL's Health and Human Performance Institute for organizing the Low Carb Houston Conference in the Bayou Building this October. Dr. Amonette and the planning committee are getting ready for an even larger event in 2020.
