Student Life School Spirit

Since 1974, University of Houston-Clear Lake have created a tradition of celebrating campus life in a variety of ways. They remind us that we are part of something amazing. School spirit is a defining aspect of campus culture and you’ll see that from our love for our furry feathered mascot, Hunter the Hawk, to wearing blue and green every Wednesday, we take every opportunity to display our pride and passion for our university. We proudly claim our position as a nationally renowned leader in higher education, research, and public service. UHCL Hawks are strong, ambitious, and prepared to make their community a better place.

  Blue and Green Wednesday Activities

On Wednesdays we wear blue and green! Throughout the year the Student Life Office will host a variety of activities centered on the university’s official school colors. The activities range from free spirit t-shirt giveaways to seasonal refreshments and food. Blue and Green Activities will also be included in other Student Life programs as well.

Stay tuned and show off your school spirit every Wednesday with #BlueandGreenWednesday.

  Chili Cook-Off

The Chili Cook-Off is the longest-standing tradition here at UHCL. This event takes place each spring semester and welcomes faculty, students, staff, alumni, and their families to a variety of chili recipes, food, music, amusements, and fun. Members of the university form teams and submit their chili recipe for a chance at bragging rights and Hunter our beloved mascot celebrates his birthday at this event. This event is a great opportunity to bring your family and friends and show them what campus life is all about.

  I Heart UHCL Day

Don’t hide your pride, show your love for UHCL! I Heart UHCL Day takes place each fall semester and now is the main event during Spirit Week. This campus tradition brings the entire campus community together to celebrate their ‘love’ for the institution. Campus offices enter decoration contests for a chance to not only win bragging rights, but to help paint the campus in blue and green. The day is also filled with a variety of games hosted by student organizations and offices, refreshments served, and spirit giveaways offered to help students enhance their school spirit.

  Mascot Program

Student Life is home to Hunter the Hawk, UHCL’s official costumed mascot. The Mascot Program is a student-led initiative. Participating students help coordinate mascot appearances at select UHCL activities and events. Students interested in serving on the Mascot Program act as Hunter’s Flight Crew (the mascot’s official entourage) or wear the coveted mascot costume. Students wearing the costume must follow a tradition practiced at many colleges and universities, concealing their identity. All students are welcome to join the program.
