Dr. Aliya Beavers Bio

Aliya Beavers (she, her, hers) is the Director of the Office of Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She has a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Black World Studies from Miami University in Ohio, a Master of Arts in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University and she has a doctorate of philosophy in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education from Michigan State University. During her 10+ years in various student affairs roles, Aliya has explored one of her research passions, the experiences of multicultural persons in higher education and beyond. By working with student groups, faculty, staff, and university task forces dedicated to creating inclusive campus climates for all, Aliya has been able to develop programs that fit the needs of a variety of populations looking to explore how Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion relates to their work. Aliya's interests include teaching Pilates and indoor cycling classes, fitness and wellness, traveling, listening to audiobooks, and enjoying time with her family and friends.

Hana Zewdie Bio

Hana Zewdie (she, her, hers) is the Assistant Director of the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She holds a B.A. in International Relations from Gonzaga University and an M.A. in Higher Education, Student Affairs, & International Education Policy with a concentration in Student Affairs from the University of Maryland. Her professional roles have included working with identity centers, social justice education, academic advising, and nonprofit diversity consulting for employers.

Hana's research and professional interests include dialogue-based learning, critical consciousness development, and intragroup relations among critically conscious student populations. Personally, she identifies as an enneagram type 5, a Disney parks fan, and reluctant runner.

Joshua Quinn Bio

Joshua Quinn (he, him, his) is the Coordinator of Women, Gender and Sexuality Programs in the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations and Master of Education in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Texas State University. Joshua joined UHCL in August 2018, and serves as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Joshua's personal interests include photography, arts and crafts, cooking/baking, house plants, social media, TV shows, anything else creative, and spending time with his loved ones.

Aja Rodriguez Bio

Aja Rodriguez (she, her, hers) is originally from the Rio Grande Valley and currently serves as the Coordinator of Diversity Programs in the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This Texas native has taken a non-traditional path through Higher Education that includes time at a large research university, small liberal arts college, and finishing up with her Masters in Student Affairs in Higher Education at a large Hispanic-Serving Institution. Along the way, she has also had extensive experience as both an HIV Prevention Counselor and Residence Hall Director. Social Justice along with topics like Comprehensive Sexuality Education, Decolonization work, and Storytelling are particular passions for her.

Firoj Gurung Bio

Firoj Gurung (he, him, his) is the Coordinator for International Student Programs in the Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University.

He is a first-generation Nepali from the indigenous Gurung tribe who grew up migrating throughout multiple communities of India and Nepal, where he gained exposure to different languages, cultures, and religions. Firoj takes pride in being the first from his family to attend college and becoming the resource for new generations to explore, embrace, and express their identities in positive and creative ways. Firoj advocates for creating a welcoming and engaging space in the higher education system for students coming from different parts of the world. His personal interests are experimenting in cooking with spices and vegetables, biking, hiking, kayaking, and volunteering in local nonprofit organizations.
