Literature Program

Program Overview/Mission

Share the experience of classic, contemporary, and multicultural Literature with other adventurous students and dedicated faculty. Be a leader in the classroom and workplace by advancing your skills in critical thinking, cultural knowledge, research and writing skills, and theories of reading. Your own advisor from Literature's full-time faculty is assigned to every Literature student to help design and complete your degree.

All UHCL Literature courses currently meet face-to-face in real-time classrooms where you join other dedicated students, lead presentations or discussions, and receive direct attention from full-time faculty who help you with your writing and research.

Curriculum and Instruction

Undergraduate Program - Bachelor of Arts
For a direct path to your degree, choose a Literature major without teacher certification but with electives that enrich your training in Communication, Writing, History, and other Human Sciences and Humanities. Or combine your major with Teacher's Certification from University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education. Your Literature faculty advisor will show you which courses to register for. "Alternative certification" may be available for LITR majors who want to finish their degrees and start teaching sooner. Minors are available from other degree programs in Human Sciences and Humanities. Talk with your advisor!

Graduate Program - Master of Arts
The M.A. in Literature expands and enriches your knowledge of texts, theories, and cultures. Seminars featuring student leadership associate you with other professionals in the literary field. You can choose between two plans of study (Coursework + comprehensive or thesis) as well as two optional concentrations (American Studies and Composition and Rhetoric). Each student in the LITR MA program is assigned a faculty advisor.

Sigma Tau Delta

The International English Honor Society has been an active part of UHCL’s Literature Program since 1989. As a society, and as friends, UHCL's Rho Omega chapter of Sigma Tau Delta strives to encourage an appreciation of literature not only among ourselves but in the community at large. We are fond of having book discussions, meeting authors, and playing lit trivia and hosting other literary events. This is not just an academic honor, but an invitation into a community of like-minded lovers of literature.

In addition to chapter opportunities, members are eligible to apply for Sigma Tau Delta scholarships and summer internships, participate in international conventions, and submit original work for publication and writing awards. Membership eligibility is currently evaluated at the start of each long semester; invitation letters are sent out to eligible students soon thereafter.

Career Opportunities

College graduates today can anticipate not one career but several, for which training in Literature makes you highly adaptable. School is a natural home for lifelong learners and gifted writers, leading many Literature majors to become teachers for at least parts of their careers. Master's students may teach by day in public or private schools before attending graduate seminars in the late afternoons or evenings. Teaching is not the only career option for Literature and other Liberal Arts graduates. Cultural knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills create opportunities in the worlds of non-profit, government, online, corporate or small businesses. Literature graduates work in publishing, communications, public relations, and job training, sometimes starting at entry-level jobs but then making ourselves indispensable by intelligently and efficiently processing information, solving problems, and communicating results.
