Kids U and Hawk STEAM Academy Summer Camps

Every summer, the Center for Educational Programs offers Kids U and Hawk STEAM Academy camps for children of all ages providing them opportunities to learn and have fun. Whether you want your child to learn more about science, math, reading, literacy, technology, character development, or cultures, there's a camp or academy for them. Find the best fit for your family and register today!

Please note the specific age/grade completion range requirements for the specific session you want. The ranges provided below show the range of age/grade levels in offered sessions.


Cultural Academy (Sessions for campers grades K-12)

Sessions include knitting, paper folding, crocheting, book making, simple jewelry making, as well as a Journey to China!

Early Childhood (Session for Pre-K campers ages 3-5)

Sessions include wheels all around, engineering madness, sensory science, enchanted engineering, fairytale science, STEMulating play, and "dreaming up" with blocks.

Hawk Steam Academy Camp (Sessions for campers grades 6-12)

Software engineering campers will become software engineers and data scientist as they work in research and development teams to explore agile software engineering techniques and basic data science through interactive, hands-on activities and games. Intro to VR programming campers will expose students to the world of virtual reality. Students will experience different types of virtual reality environments, games, and simulations.

Literacy Academy (Sessions for campers grades K-8)

Sessions include mystery mania, writing like an author, blogging about books, write your own graphic novel, and more.

Math (Session for campers grades 2-3) 

I have a problem; can you solve it? Students will be put to the test using logic and math skills to solve several brain bending problems. Leave this course equipped with experiments and tricks that will amaze friends and family. Math exploration can be fun but has it ever been this messy? You decide.

Summer campers must be in the listed age range or completed a grade in the grade range in order to register for each camp. If you have any questions, please email cep@uhcl.edu.

Required Forms To Complete Registration

Additional Registration Information

  • Incomplete or missing forms will result in cancelled registration.
  • All camp registrations must be completed and submitted by noon on the Thursday prior to the week your child's camp starts.  
  • There will be no walk-in onsite registrations.  
  • Payment and Cancellation policies available on registration sites.
  • Parents may drop off their campers no sooner than ten minutes before the start of camp.  
  • Campers must be picked up promptly at the end of camp.

Pre/Post Camp (Extended Day Options)

Pre/post camp activities are available at the Clear Lake Campus for a fee. Pre camp is from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and post camp is from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Activities will vary based on age and number of registrants. Registration information for pre and/or post camp activities.

Soaring Hawks Girls Code Academy

The Soaring Hawks Girls Code Academy is a FREE one-week summer camp, which will provide computer coding/programming for 25 middle school girls in grades six (6) through eight (8). The summer camp is a collaboration between the College of Education and College of Science and Engineering and funded by Halliburton. The purpose of the Girls Code Academy is to increase the interest of middle school girls in coding and programming by providing hands-on experiences in summer camps that include challenging and innovative concepts and experiences in learning, problem solving, and analytical skills, and simultaneously fostering an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related careers.

Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements (underserved populations). Lunch is NOT provided campers will need to bring their own lunch.

The Soaring Hawks Code Academy is a FREE one-week summer camp, which will provide computer provide experiences in robotics and game design to 75 students from Brazoria, Harris, and Galveston counties. The camps explore robotics and game design for 75 middle school students in grades six (6) through eight (8). The summer camp is a collaboration between the College of Education and College of Science and Engineering and funded through the Texas Workforce Commission's Governor's Summer Merit Program. The purpose of the STEM in Action with Robots and Game Design Academy is to increase the interest of middle school students in robotics and game design by providing hands-on experiences in summer camps that include challenging and innovative concepts and experiences in learning, problem solving, and analytical skills, and simultaneously fostering an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related careers.

Soaring Hawks Code Academy offers three (3) one-week summer camp sessions. Each camp session will host 25 middle school student. Each participant is limited to participating in only one week of the Academy. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements. Lunch will be provided.

Explore STEM Camp

Explore STEM camp applicants must be 14-22 years of age, with disabilities and currently enrolled in school. Students registered with Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) should contact their TWC counselor for a referral that will allow them to attend the camp at no cost. If you are not currently registered with TWC you can register at the Texas Workforce Commission Website. Applicants wishing to self-pay for the camp can register at the link provided below.

Session One: Introduction to Digital Design, Art and Animation (Virtual)

June 5-9, 2023
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This is an introductory level STEM camp. Basic computer literacy required. The camp will begin with an introduction to Digital Design and Art then progress to Animation. The camp will also focus on storytelling and character creation in the context of game development. Similar camps have been offered in the past and the scaffolded approach to design, art, animation, and game development allows students with an array of skill levels to be successful. The camp will be delivered virtually using Zoom.

Session Two: Introduction to Music and Sound Development (Virtual)

June 19-23, 2023
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This is an introductory level STEM camp. Basic computer literacy required. The camp will begin with an introduction to music and sound effects then progress to creating music and sound effects for video games. Students that took the art and animation camp  can use the same characters and scenes they developed as the inspiration for their music and sound effects in this camp. Similar camps have been offered in the past and the scaffolded approach to robotics allows students with an array of skill levels to be successful. 

Session Three: Introduction to Coding and Video Game Development (Virtual)

July 17-21, 2023
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This is an introductory level STEM camp. Basic computer literacy required. The camp will begin with an introduction to coding structures then progress to game development. Students that took either of the previous camps will be able to use their game art, animations, and sounds to enhance their game development process. Similar camps have been offered in the past and the scaffolded approach to coding and game development allows students with an array of skill levels to be successful. The camp will be delivered virtually using Zoom.
