Greater Houston Community Foundation

The Greater Houston Community Foundation (GHCF) administers a variety of unique scholarship funds that grant over $4 million annually to college students. The scholarship funds have been established by thoughtful and generous donors and each has a unique set of eligibility criteria and award structure.

Scholarship Application User's Guide

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

  • Eligibility:
    • Be a U.S. citizen and Texas resident.
    • Graduating high school senior from eligible school
    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
    • Plan to attend an accredited, not-for-profit university in the State of Texas.
    • Have met minimum score requirement for either SAT or ACT.
  • Amount: varies
  • Application Deadline: January 31

Strategic Officer Recruiting Detachment (SORD)

  • Eligibility:
    • Be a U.S. citizen.
    • Be between the ages of 17 and 26.
    • Have a high school GPA of at least 2.5.
    • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Meet physical standards.
    • Agree to accept a commission and serve in the Army on Active Duty or in a Reserve Component (Army Reserve or Army National Guard).
  • Amount: Tuition and fees

Scholarships offered through UH Foundation

The new UHF scholarship system is accepting scholarships from Monday, March 18, 2024 through April 12, 2024 for the 2024-25 academic year. 

Steps to Apply:

  • Click the red Scholarships button on the UH Foundation website
  • Set up a BBID (Black Baud ID) account.  Returning applicants must use the same email used in a prior year. If you cannot remember the email used, contact scholarship@uhfdn.org and provide your full name.
  • Login will be your user name (email) and password.
  • Complete the General Application.
  • You will receive a email after application is successfully submitted.
  • You can login anytime to check the status, and you will receive an award or regret email once scholarship selections are made. 

ABPW/Rosemary Pledger

  • Eligibility: Any degree in the UHCL College of Business. Must be female interested in pursuing a career in Business and/or Public Administration.  Must be a US citizen or permanent resident, as well as a Texas resident.
  • GPA: Minimum 2.5
  • Status: Undergraduate enrolled in at least 6 hours / Graduate enrolled in at least 5 hours. Preference given to women reentering the workforce and have demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Additional Documentation: One-page description of your academic and career goals and how this scholarship would be of financial assistance to you

Application expected in March:  UH Foundation ABPW/Rosemary Pledger

Lightfoot/Johns Family

  • Major: Accounting
  • GPA: No specific requirement but will be a factor
  • Status: Undergraduate minimum 6 hours enrollment or Graduate minimum 5 hours enrollment. Preference given to single parents with custody of children living at home
  • Financial Need: Will be a factor (you will be required to submit a FAFSA at by the UHCL priority deadline of March 15)
  • Additional Documentation: Brief paragraph about your children

ABPW/Carrie Lee Warren

  • Major: Education
  • GPA:  Outstanding merit
  • Status:  Must be a female pursuing a career in public school education
  • Financial Need:  Will not be a factor

Paul Baskaran

  • Major: Graduate degree in Healthcare Administration
  • GPA:  3.0 minimum
  • Status: International student, preferably from India
  • Additional Documentation
    • Birth certificate or passport
    • One-page description of your academic and career goals and how this scholarship would be of financial assistance to you

Annapurna Tulasiram

  • GPA:  3.0 minimum
  • Status:
    • Female
    • Person of Color
    • Full Time undergraduate student

Sandor Turanyi

  • GPA:  2.5 minimum
  • Status:
    • A first or second generation Hungarian
      • or from the Hungarian minority in a neighboring Country,
      • or an international student from the previously mentioned with a non-immigrant visa (temporary)
    • Completed at least 1 semester at UHCL/UH
    • Full-time enrollment

Hispanic Students

HACU Scholarships

  • To be eligible to apply for HACU Scholarships, applicants must meet the following HACU Scholarship Program criteria listed below. 
    • Are currently enrolled  at a HACU-member institution in the U.S. or Puerto Rico;
    • Have graduated from a high school (or have earned a high school equivalency diploma) in the U.S. or Puerto Rico;
    • Have completed your first-semester of college at a HACU-member institution;
    • Intend to enroll at a HACU-member institution in the following academic year. If you are transferring institutions, the institution must also be HACU-member to be eligible to apply;
    • Demonstrate financial need if required by the scholarship sponsor (typically determined by the FAFSA)

Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) Scholarships

Hispanic Heritage Foundation

  • Requirements:
    • Be currently enrolled in high school and graduating in the spring of 2024
    • Must have a minimum unweighted 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or 7.5 on a 10.0 scale
    • Must enroll at an accredited higher education institution in 2024-2025
    • Be of Hispanic heritage (includes Spain, Brazil, Philippines)
    • If selected, attendance to virtual regional awards ceremony is mandatory

Additional Scholarships

Lee & Gatha Jones Legacy Foundation

  • Eligibility: Current college student (at least 2nd semester freshman) with a minimum 2.7 GPA. Graduated from a Texas high school, with preference given to graduates from Galveston County.
  • To Apply: Applicants must submit a recent photo with application to info@joneslegacyfoundation.org
  • Amount: $1,500
  • Application Deadline: November 1, 2023
