Environmental Institute of Houston

EIH Habitat Gardens

The Environmental Institute of Houston mission is to advance understanding of the environment through interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach. They provide access to environmental information to the university and the community through outreach activities, seminars, and presentations that spotlight topics that are of vital importance to students, citizens, teachers, and technical audiences.

Volunteers will be maintaining the EIH habitat gardens: weeding, pruning, planting or potting, moving soil or mulch, clearing pathways, prepping flower beds, etc. 

  • No experience is necessary, and we have tools and gloves you can use
  • Volunteers should wear clothes and closed-toe shoes that they don’t mind getting dirty or muddy
  • Don’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and hat!

Armand Bayou Nature Center

Armand Bayou Nature Center is one of the largest urban wildlife refuge in the United States. The organization works to preserve the wetlands prairie, forest and marsh habitats surrounding Armand Bayou. They provide opportunities for people to experience and understand the local ecosystem, and are home to over 370 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Volunteers will help maintain the McGovern Children Discovery Area, which is used as an outside classroom. The job includes: weeding, planting, trimming, mulching and a variety of other gardening duties. 

Galveston County Food Bank

 Galveston County Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that has provided food for people at risk of hunger throughout Galveston County for twelve years.

Volunteers will check, clean, sort and box salvaged food and non-food packaged items. These items will then be made available to participating agencies for distribution throughout Galveston County.
