Day of Service is UHCL's annual event in which students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members give back to the community through service. Formerly known as Community Outreach Day.

The purpose of UHCL’s Day of Service is to connect our students to opportunities to volunteer in our community and develop a heart for servant leadership. Join your fellow students, faculty, staff, alumni, community and family members to volunteer for one of many service projects during UHCL’s official Day of Service program.

Site Leaders

Interested in becoming a Site Leader?
Application deadline: February 12 at 5 p.m.

Day of Service Site Leaders are on-site project coordinators. Site Leaders are responsible for the following:

  • Attend Site Leader training
  • Be present at morning kick off
  • Arrange transportation/carpools to project site
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled check-in/arrival time
  • Be responsible for volunteers on site
  • Lead reflection at the end of project

  Alzheimer's Association
 
  • Description of Project: Volunteers will help assemble packets and help us prepare materials for our Texas State Advocacy Day.
  • Number of Volunteers: 25
  • Age limit/requirement: N/A
  • Dress Code: casual wear is fine. Dress in purple as a bonus!
  • Time Frame: 3 hours (suggesting 9am - 12pm)
  • Location and Directions: Chapter Office: 6055 South Loop East @ Long Drive, Houston, TX 77087

 

  Hope Village
 
  • Description of project: directing parking, trash pickup (as diners complete meal), make sure restrooms remain stocked with paper goods, serve tea/water/lemonade, and wipe dining tables.
  • Number of volunteers: 20
  • Dress code: casual clothing according to weather and comfortable shoes
  • Time frame: 11:30-3:30
  • Location and Directions: Hope Village campus located at 4541 FM 2351 Friendswood, TX 77546.
  Lighthouse Christian Ministries
 
  • Description of Project: community garden workday at KE little elementary, projects could include building beds, weeding, harvesting, or general gardening tasks.
  • Number of volunteers: 20
  • Age limit: All ages welcome
  • Dress Code/Things to Bring: Work clothes, gardening tools (if you have them), and gardening gloves
  • Time Frame: 8am-11am
  AMED Community Healthcare
 
  • Description of Project: AMED will be sponsoring a bingo event for senior citizens
  • Number of volunteers: 20
  • Age Limit/Requirement: 18 and up
  • Dress Code/What to bring: Jeans with no holes, closed toed shoes, collared shirt, or dress shirt. No perfume or cologne
  • Time Frame: 9:30 am-Noon
  Anchor Point
 
  • Description of Project: Service Project
  • Number of Volunteers: 10
  • Age Limit/Requirement: None
  • Dress Code/What to bring: Work day type clothes that can get dirty
  • Time Frame: 9:00 am-12:00 pm
  • Location and Directions: 103 Davis Rd League City, Tx 77573
  Resource & Crisis Center of Galveston County, Inc.
 
  • Description of Project: Cleaning up trash and mowing our new property
  • Number of Volunteers: 8-10
  • Age Limit/Requirement: 18 years and older
  • Dress Code: Nothing reveling, or that promotes alcohol, drugs, sex or violence.
  • What to bring: If you have it bring lawn care supplies, (rake, lawn mower, weed eater, trash ags, etc.)
  • Time Frame: 3-5 hours
  • Location and Directions: 1204 45th St, Galveston, TX (Corner of 45th Street and Ave L)
  Galveston County Food Bank
 
  • Project Description: Quality control and reclamation of donated product.
  • Number of volunteers: 30
  • Age limit: Children must be 10 years of age or older and accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
  • Dress code: Closed-toed shoes are required, no jewelry is permitted.
  • Time Frame: 9:00 am to Noon

  Armand Bayou Nature Center
 

The team will be weeding the demonstration garden and the path in front of it. Cutting out the undergrowth behind and beside the garden (which is under the elevated walk. Cutting down the undergrowth under the trees on the far side of the garden.

The team will also trim the tree saplings back in the meadow area behind garden - with especial interest paid to area next to the elevated walkway and entrance to the walk. (Keep the weeds down to help maintain the walk, fewer trees to shade out the garden, and craft the image.)

  Youth For Christ
 

Volunteers will work alongside our kids to complete the following projects:

  • Restoring flower beds
  • Building flower beds
  • Restoring residents garden lots
  • Building a new garden lot
  • Must be over 21. Must complete paper work no later than the February 17th!
  Bay Area Habitat for Humanity- Houston, Inc.
 
  • Description of Project: Assisting with building construction of a home
  • Number of Volunteers: 20
  • Age limit: 16+
  • Dress Code/What to bring: Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in
  • Time Frame: 8am-2pm (at the latest)

  Day of Service

  • Free and open to the public
  • Registration closed!
  • Sign-Up for the Day of Service Project Day. Participants must be pre-registered for a UHCL Day of Service Project Day to attend the Orientation.
  • Site Leader: A Day of Service Site Leader is a student, faculty, staff, or alumni who is in charge of volunteer management, and on site logistics during Day of Service.
  • All Site Leaders must:Attend one Site Leader training
  • Be present at morning kick off
  • At least ONE site leader for each project must be a driver for the campus carpool
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled check-in/arrival time
  • Be responsible for volunteers on site
    Lead reflection at the end of project
