Student Health Insurance

AcademicBlue (pdf) is UHCL's student health insurance recommendation for the 2017-2018. academic year. Visit or call 855-824-9683 for Blue Cross Blue Shield TX (BCBSTX) premium and benefit plan information.

Domestic Students

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 mandates that all US citizens have a compliant health insurance policy or be enrolled in a public health plan (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare). Individuals who are not covered by an acceptable health insurance policy will be charged an annual tax penalty (the higher of $695 or 2.5% of income per adult).

Eligibility: Currently enrolled students must be registered for at least

  • 6 credit hours - undergraduate
  • 3 credit hours - graduate
International Students

You are required to have health insurance regardless of the number of credit hours you are taking. The cost for AcademicBlue (pdf) health insurance is automatically included in your school fees.

Blue Access for Members (BAM)

If you are enrolled in AcademicBlue student insurance, you have online access to:

  • ID Cards
  • Explanations of Benefits
  • Network Providers
  • Claim Status

Log into BAM as follows:

  • Go to
  • In Quick Links, click Blue Access for Members (BAM) and log in.
    Your login credentials for BAM are sent to you by BCBSTX when you enroll in Academic Blue student insurance.

BAM includes BAM Mobile, a self-service tool, with a Message Center that securely sends email notifications to your email from BCBSTX. If you prefer paper copies, you can opt out of electronic messages by changing options in My Email Preferences.

Primary Care

UHCL Health Center can be your primary care facility with the university's insurance program. We bill insurance for services rendered within the UHCL clinic.


In an emergency, you may go to the nearest Urgent Care or Hospital to seek immediate medical attention without a referral. You will be responsible for meeting the required deductible as stated in the policy.
