European-born, University of Houston-Clear Lake alumnus Serge Timacheff has taken more than two million photographs of fencing. While Timacheff’s work has appeared globally across media platforms, his survey in the UHCL Art Gallery marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in a visual arts space. Featuring nearly 30 works spanning over a decade, the photographs that appeared on view conveyed athletic prowess, immortalized moments of greatness and explored themes of the determination of the human spirit.
An accomplished fencer himself, Timacheff began shooting competitions after his son began participating in the sport in their home city of Issaquah, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. Working the local circuit, his images soon came to the attention of the president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), and in 2003 he was hired with exclusive rights to shoot FIE events. Timacheff attended both UHCL and Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California.
This exhibition was generously funded by Lunar Rendezvous Festival.
