Who can participate?

This ceremony celebrates graduates from the spring 2020, summer 2020, fall 2020, and spring 2021. Since these groups of graduating students missed the opportunity to participate in an in-person ceremony, UHCL promised to invite these classes of students back for a ceremony to be held in-person.  Participation in this ceremony is not required, and restricted to only graduates and their guests from these terms/semesters.

Can I participate in another ceremony at a later date?

No, this ceremony will be the only opportunity for these graduates to participate in an in-person ceremony. For social distancing and safety arrangements, it is imperative that graduates interested in participating RSVP by the October 29 deadline.

Do I need to RSVP?

Yes, graduates must RSVP for the ceremony by the October 29 deadline. This deadline is important so that we may arrange safety measures and determine the number of guest tickets each graduate may order. The number of guests requested will help us determine socially-distanced ticketing options for our graduate guests.

Do I need to wear Regalia?

Yes. Commencement regalia can be ordered online at the bookstore. In order to receive the regalia on-time the deadline for orders is November 9, 2021.

Please do not bring coats, bags, or personal items. There will not be a coat check nor storage facility for bags. Please arrive dressed in regalia. For instructions on how to wear regalia, visit the Herff Jones website. 

When should I (and my guests) arrive?
Doors for graduate check-in will open one hour prior to the scheduled beginning of the ceremony. We recommend arriving downtown at least one and a half hours prior to the scheduled beginning of the ceremony to allow time to park and walk to the facility.
Is there parking? 

Minute Maid park does have parking lots; however, these locations will fill quickly. Some graduates and guest will need to find parking downtown and walk to the park. Please expect to pay for parking in any of the lots downtown. Gates open one hour prior to the schedule start time of the ceremony.

What will happen at the ceremony?

Degrees were conferred during virtual commencement and each graduate should have already received a diploma, program, and alumni pin. You do not need to bring these items with you to the ceremony. The focus of this ceremony will be calling each graduate’s name, walking the stage, and having your photo taken.

Upon check-in you will be provided a name card with your seat. It is important that you keep your name card, check the spelling of your name, and sit in your assigned seat. Volunteers will be available to direct you to the correct area of the stadium and to your assigned seat.

Once the ceremony begins and after the faculty and platform party processionals, there will be the pledge, and welcoming remarks from various speakers. After the deans complete introductions, marshals will signal each row of graduates to move from the stands to the field toward the stage. Please follow the instructions of the marshals. Upon crossing the stage, each graduate will hand their name card to the announcer. The announcer will call the graduate’s name as they cross the stage. A photo will be taken of the graduate receiving an empty diploma tube, then a photo will be taken as the graduate exits the stage. Marshals will direct graduates to their seat. We ask that all graduates remain seated until the completion of the ceremony.

What are the health and safety protocols?

In accordance with CDC guidelines, we recommend that each graduate and guest engage in a self- screening process to identify symptoms of COVID-19. If a graduate or a guest identifies symptoms of COVID-19, please do not attend the ceremony. The ceremony will be streamed live for those guests not in attendance. See below FAQ for streaming information.

We encourage each graduate and their guests to wear a mask and make use of the sanitization stations set up at various locations within the facility.

Upon check-in graduates will be asked to proceed directly to their pre-assigned socially distanced and sanitized seat. Graduates will not be asked to line up nor participate in a processional into their seats. This arrangement is designed to provide a safe and socially distanced check-in and seating process.

Upon arrival, graduates and guests will be asked to verbally confirm that they do not have symptoms of COVID-19.

At the ceremony conclusion, students will not process out, but instead will to exit in an orderly manner while maintaining social distancing.

Will the ceremony be livestreamed?

Yes, the ceremony will be livestreamed to accommodate graduates and guests who are not in attendance. More information (including a link) will be posted to this site.
