Mary B. Short, Ph.D.

Biography

Dr. Mary Short is a professor of clinical psychology. She also served as the interim associate dean for the College of Human Sciences and Humanities from June 2022 to January 2023. 

Dr. Short received her doctorate from Western Michigan University. She completed her internship training in clinical psychology at Boys' Town in Omaha, Nebraska and post-doctoral training at University of Texas Medical Branch. 

Dr. Short's program of research focuses on pediatric health psychology. Her main focus is on the promotion of health in adolescent and young adults, especially the mechanism by which people engage or do not engage in health behaviors. This research is based on the integration of theories of health behaviors (vaccinations, sexual risk, and mental health). She examines the variables associated with fostering development of healthy behaviors, including parental variables and parental behaviors.

She has experience conducting cognitive and behavioral interventions with adults, teens, and children. Her clinical specialty areas include behavioral parent training interventions for child disruptive behaviors, and child behavior therapy treatment of child and adolescent anxiety and mood disorders.

Dr. Short has had an active research lab for the past 15 years, and she involves both graduates and undergraduates in her research projects. Further, students publish and present with Dr. Short on a regular basis. She will be taking doctoral students for the 2022-2023 academic year.
