Department Assistant III for the Department of Clinical, Health, and Applied Sciences (CHAS)

Shelly Matejka is the Department Assistant III for the Department of Clinical, Health, and Applied Sciences (CHAS). Matejka has over 20 years professional experience in higher education. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). Prior to joining UHCL, she worked at several area hospitals, including University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Currently, she supports the department chair and programs of CHAS.  These programs include several professional graduate programs in psychology (Behavior Analysis, Clinical Psychology, Family Therapy, and School Psychology) and the Combined (Clinical/School) Doctoral Program in Psychology.  She also supports another graduate program (Exercise and Health Sciences) and two undergraduate programs (Kinesiology and Social Work). She is currently working toward Certified Educational Office Professional certificate, and she is a member of the Texas Educational Support Staff Association.

Welcome to the Foreign Language Program and Continuing Education programs in HSH!  My name is Christine M. Paul, and I feel honored to have the merit to be the founder and director of these programs. My educational background includes undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Mississippi and Louisiana State University in French and German literature, as well as Spanish pedagogical training. In between these studies, I was fortunate to receive full government scholarships to attend the Goethe Institut in Germany;  L'Institut Pedagogique in Paris, France, and later at L'Universite Sainte-Anne in Nouvelle Ecosse (Nova Scotia); with more recent studies at the University of Miami, Florida, where I completed their intensive Spanish Language Pedagogic program.

UHCL has provided excellent experiences, where I have been able to expand my expertise in the classroom, teaching French, German, English, and Spanish to outstanding students from all corners of the world.

A highlight of my professional life was being a part of the training crew for the Joint Venture with the Russian Space Agency, as the first cosmonauts trained in Clear Lake, right here at UHCL in our English Enhancement program.

One great aspect of working in HSH is the pleasure to do new and exciting programs, as well as meet delightful students in Foreign Languages as well as our Friday Morning Continuing Education. I am always impressed by how motivated these students are, and how hard they work. They enrich my life every day!

In addition to our programs, I enjoy connecting with students in other arenas, specifically salsa dancing and book clubs, as well as volunteering as a Hebrew (and Aramaic) teacher in a local Hebrew school. When possible, I enjoy traveling, and have greatly enjoyed my time in Japan and Israel.

William Powers began teaching history in UHCL's Texas Department of Corrections Program at the University of Houston Clear Lake 1997, and in 1999 became the program's director. He has served in that capacity for more than 22 years. He has consulted with various higher education institutions who have sought to participate in correctional education and participated and chaired conferences and panels dealing with correctional education. William completed his Ph.D. at Texas A&M University in May 1993 in the field of 20th Century US History, specifically the petroleum industry. His dissertation, "Over A Barrel: Government Influence and Mergers and Acquisitions in the Petroleum Industry, The Case of Sun Oil Company, 1938-1989" is a macro-economic examination of a politically active Northeastern Petroleum conglomerate.

In his role as Adjunct Instructor Of History, Dr. Powers has taught an array of classes including US Since 1945, topics include U.S. Business History, The Politics of Oil and Oil Wars, The Cold War, and The Vietnam War; U.S. 1919-1945, including The Great Depression, World War II in Europe, U.S. and World War II; The Holocaust; US 1877-1919, including The South Since Reconstruction, The Gilded Age (The Rise of Industrial America); Civil War & Reconstruction at both graduate and undergraduate level, Modern Britain; HIST 1301-US To 1877; and HIST 1302-US Since 1877.

Administrative Assistant II, The Art School for Children

Beth Sheppard works in the Art School for Children with Dr. David Moya, director. As part of the Art Education degree, the Art School offers programs on campus and in the community for over 1,000 children per year. She has a degree in Art History and completed a M.A. in Humanities from UHCL in 2018. Originally from Massachusetts, she has worked at several universities.

Caye Trahan joined University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2015, providing administrative support to College of HSH faculty, who primarily instructed first and second-year courses. This was especially exciting because prior to fall 2014, there were no freshman or sophomore students enrolled at UHCL. It was also a great opportunity to witness spectacular achievements by new faculty and outstanding accomplishments from first-time UHCL students learning to soar at a university campus.

Currently, as Administrative Assistant II, Caye supports the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences, which encompasses anthropology, cross-cultural studies, criminology, geography, political science, behavioral science, public service leadership, and sociology programs. The department offers graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as minors and certificates.

Caye earned a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Houston-Clear Lake (Go Hawks!) and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from University of Houston. Her previous employment includes 20 years of human resources and corporate benefits experience. While at UHCL, Caye’s skills have expanded to include many college business office functions such as Pcard reconciliations, ePARs/departmental payroll entry, and PeopleSoft Finance transactions. She is a member of the Texas Educational Support Staff Association (TESA) and holds the Certified Educational Office Professional (CEOP) designation.

In her leisure time, Caye looks forward to bass fishing in freshwater lakes across Texas and Louisiana, kayaking, and cooking authentic Cajun meals for family and friends.

Evangelina Urdiales joined the university as an administrative assistant in November 2012 in the college of HSH advising office and was promoted to Academic Advisor for the TDCJ program in May 2016. She earned a Bachelors of Arts and Communications from Valparaiso University (2004) and a master's degree in liberal studies from Arizona State (2016).
