Get Your Degree in a 21st Century STEM Facility

Earn your degree in our new, cutting-edge facility with 15 teaching labs for mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, geology, industrial hygiene and environmental safety. Gain hands-on experience with 12 specialty rooms designed for mechanical-engineering projects, computer-aided drafting, 3-D printing and more. Application

New Incoming Undergraduate Students: Apply online through Apply Texas for admission to the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Documents for admission are submitted after completion of the Apply Texas application. All required documents are due by the Freshman, Transfer, and International Admissions application deadlines.

Application Process (Major Changes) for Current UHCL Students:  Current UHCL students who wish to be considered for admission into the Mechanical Engineering, BS program must meet the same secondary admission criteria as transfer students. Upon meeting with an academic advisor, current students will submit an Academic Record Change Form (PDF) to the Office of Academic Advising in the College of Science and Engineering to apply for a Major Change.

Freshman Requirements

All new incoming first-year undergraduate students with 0-29 college credit hours or students entering college for the first time after high school graduation.

For admission into the Mechanical Engineering program applicants must meet the following minimum criteria.

Students without a class rank or test scores will be reviewed based on CGPA:

  • High School CGPA of 3.25 and higher – Direct Admission into Mechanical Engineering, BS program.
  • High School CGPA of below 3.24 – Students who meet UHCL regular admission criteria can be admitted as Pre-Engineering.

Recommended preparation courses for Mechanical Engineering include completion of the following either in high school or through dual credit:

  • Precalculus (MATH 2412) and/or Calculus (MATH 2413)

Transfer Students and Major Changes for Current Students

All new incoming transfer undergraduate students that have completed 30 or more college hours after high school graduation.

To be considered for admission into the Mechanical Engineering, BS program, students must meet the GPA requirements shown in the table below and must have credit for (can include AP credit).

Prerequisites: All courses must be completed with the required "C" or better to earn admission into the program

  • MATH 2413 - Calculus I
  • MATH 2414 - Calculus II
  • CHEM 1311 and 1111 - General Chemistry with Lab
  • PHYS 2425 - University Physics I with Lab

*In the calculation of each GPA, the most recent attempt taken at any institution is used - even if a higher grade was earned in a prior attempt.
